Against a backdrop of rising fuel costs and growing environmental concerns, the Indian government is taking steps to introduce alternative fuel options for vehicles. One notable solution is the adoption of ethanol-based fuels. Based on this, Toyota India introduced the Innova HyCross Flex Fuel prototype, which combines an ethanol blend with electric capabilities.
Unlike the usual 15-20 per cent ethanol blend with 80–85 per cent petrol, this new version of the Innova HyCross features a 100 per cent ethanol-based flex engine, albeit with a slightly lower power output. The new version is based on the 7-seater ZX trim of the strong hybrid HyCross.
Toyota claims that this flex-fuel variant can handle 60 percent of daily commutes using its ethanol-powered drivetrain, with the EV mode covering a significant portion of journeys. Although still in the prototype stage, this vehicle aligns with Stage 2, BS-6 emission norms, showcasing Toyota's environmental commitment.
The 2.0-L engine produces 144 bhp, down from the 184 bhp of its hybrid counterpart, with the electric motor driving the rear wheels. The torque remains steady at 188 Nm, paired with an unchanged e-CVT transmission. The standout feature is the combination of a more environmentally sustainable fuel option with an electric motor, promising improved fuel efficiency of around 23.24 kmpl—surpassing the capabilities of the hybrid version it's based on.
While a specific launch date is undisclosed, this innovation could potentially emerge as a practical substitute for traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, leading the way toward more sustainable and eco-conscious mobility solutions.
