While the addition of so many charging stations in a small state like Tripura might seem surprising, it's important to note the potential for future growth.

Tripura government is set to install 45 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the state before the Durga Puja festival, which begins on September 28, 2025.

The initiative, announced by State Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath, is a part of the state’s commitment to clean energy and green mobility.

Tripura’s EV Policy

Tripura already has a dedicated Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy from 2022. This policy aims to promote EVs in the state, reduce pollution, and enhance energy security.

The policy set a target of deploying 60,000 EVs over five years. Proactive infrastructure development is crucial to encourage this growth and alleviate potential "range anxiety" among prospective EV owners, which is a major concern globally.

The installation of charging stations aligns with this commitment to sustainable transportation and supporting India's broader renewable energy goals.

Nath also stated that this project is in sync with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s wider vision to reduce India’s dependency on fossil fuels and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Key nationwide initiatives such as the Solar Mission and the EV Policy are already paving the way for climate resilience and sustainable development.

Railway Electrification and Renewable Shift

In addition to EV infrastructure development, the state’s railway network is currently undergoing electrification.

The transition from diesel to electric engines has been completed and now awaits final approval from the Railway Board. This measure is expected to substantially cut the state’s carbon emissions in the transport sector.

Tripura is also enhancing its focus on renewable energy sources like solar and wind. With natural gas reserves depleting, the government aims to shift towards more sustainable options.

Under the PM-KUSUM scheme, 694 households in Tripura have already installed solar panels, contributing to decentralised solar power generation.
