There has been lots of confusion about the on-road price of the Triumph Speed 400. We clear the air!
The Triumph Speed 400 is the talk of the town, for good and bad reasons. The good reason is its jaw-dropping price tag of Rs. 2.23 lakh (ex-showroom) for the first 10,000 units. Yes, a genuine Triumph motorcycle under Rs. 2.25 lakh, and understandably, a plethora of Indian bikers got excited and started pre-booking the motorcycle. Such has been the frenzy that unofficial sources claim that Triumph has received over 9,000 bookings for the new Speed 400, which is unprecedented for a motorcycle in this segment.
But then a post claiming the atrociously high on-road pricing did the rounds, and a lot of buyers vented their frustration on social media. According to a South India-based dealer, the on-road price of the Triumph Speed 400 would be Rs. 3.38 lakh, that’s over a Rs. 1 lakh price difference between the ex-showroom and on-road pricing. The dealer was charging a whopping Rs. 17,000 as delivery charges and Rs. 8,500 as an intro kit.
Ex-showroom Price | Rs. 2,33,000 |
Road Tax | Rs. 46,553 |
Delivery Charges | Rs. 17,000 |
Registration and RTO Charges | Rs. 3,937 |
RSA | Rs. 6,016 |
Insurance | Rs. 23,952 |
Intro Kit | Rs. 8,500 |
On-road Price | Rs. 3,38,598 |
By law, a dealer can’t charge a delivery charge to the consumer, and yet this malpractice is persistent. The pressure tactic used by dealers is to promise quick delivery timelines when waiting periods are high, but we would encourage buyers not to fall for this trick. The intro kit consisted of polish and included some basic add-ons, but, unlike the delivery charge, the intro kit is optional.
As you can see, these two things have hiked the on-road price of the bike by almost Rs. 25,000, which is a huge chunk of money. Even the insurance quote according to us is on the higher side as normally dealers have a margin in this too and I will suggest buyers check insurance rates on their own (do please check Acko Insurance for a great deal). According to our research, the on-road price of the Triumph Speed 400 should be between Rs. 2.80-Rs. 2.95 lakh depending on the location of purchase.
Gladly, Bajaj and Triumph Motorcycles have sent a press release mentioning that the figures quoted by the dealer aren't correct and that they will be announcing the on-road pricing on July 10. This is a great move as the brands have put in a lot of hard work to price the new Speed 400 so aggressively and a dealer shouldn’t undo their effort. As I always maintain, real value is only delivered when a customer is able to afford the product and not just an enticing number on paper. You can read the official quote from Bajaj Auto and Triumph Motorcycles, below.
“At Bajaj Auto Ltd., we are committed to our customers and follow the highest standards of transparency, including pricing. We would urge all our customers and media to ignore the rumours doing the rounds across various public and social media platforms related to the on-road pricing of the new Triumph Speed 400. The company has not released any on-road price guidelines, and the same would be in line with its other products and industry norms. This will be issued by July 10, 2023."
