Former UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, had delayed the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in the UK from 2030 to 2035
Former UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, in 2023, had delayed the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in the United Kingdom from 2030 to 2035 and that was hailed as a milestone decision by the automotive industry there. But after the conservative party lost the general elections, the 2030 ban on the sale of ICE vehicles is back on the table. One of the major points put forth by the Labour Party in its manifesto was, “Restoring the phase-out date of 2030 for new cars with internal combustion engines” and hence one can foresee the next steps to be taken by Keir Stamer’s party.
The Labour Party’s manifesto also said that it would support the EV manufacturing industry and used electric car buyers, as well as hold an investigation into high insurance prices. It also committed to helping used car buyers switch to electric motoring by “standardising the information supplied on the condition of batteries”.

The Labour Party has also said that it would invest an amount of £1.5 billion through taxes into building electric car gigafactories. Tata Motors (owner of Jaguar Land Rover) in fact already announced that it will invest in a Gigafactory in Bridgewater, Somerset an amount of £4 billion to build an electric battery plant there. This will be Europe’s largest EV battery factory.
While there have been no significant talks on this post-election win, we wait to see what happens here.
