UN Security Council to hold historic meeting on AI Regulation

The United Nations Security Council is set to convene its first-ever formal discussion on artificial intelligence (AI) this week in what is expected to be a significant step toward addressing the potential risks and opportunities posed by the rapidly evolving AI landscape. Currently holding the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council, the British government will lead the discussion on AI regulation and call for an international dialogue on AI's impact on global peace and security.

Governments worldwide are grappling with the complex challenge of harnessing the benefits of AI while mitigating its potential dangers. The rapid advancements in AI can reshape economies, transform industries, and fundamentally alter the international security landscape. Britain has been actively seeking a leadership role in AI regulation, recognising the need for a coordinated global approach.

British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly will chair Tuesday's first discussion on AI. The discussion follows a notable proposal put forward in June by a group of prominent artificial intelligence executives, which garnered the support of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The proposal suggested the creation of an international AI watchdog body similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The IAEA is a central authority for nuclear technologies, promoting peaceful uses and ensuring safeguards against their misuse.
