From new players entering the space to key refreshes for existing line-ups, these electrics are likely to arrive in 2024
2024 is promising to be a big year for electric two-wheeler makers. The first quarter is going to shape up massively for them as everyone will have to deal with the impending deadline for FAME-II subsidies running dry, which is March 31. Hence, while the rest of the year will not go without any action, we might see manufacturers rejigging their line-up and delivering products that suit life post subsidies. So, here are the EVs that we think will arrive in 2024:
Ather’s 2024 starts with the final chapter in the 450 platform’s legacy with the launch of the 450 Apex. This scooter is meant to be the pinnacle of what Ather believes its 450 platform would be capable of and will look to create a new range of sporty electric scooters in the future. The Apex will go on sale on January 6 and deliveries for the same will commence from March onwards.
That’s not all. Depending on how the FAME-II situation pans out, whether or not the government does decide to give an extension, Ather will bring out its first family e-scooter. This would be a departure from the norm for the sporty e-scooter maker. More on this e-scooter in the second half of the year.
Bajaj did ‘launch’ the new Urbane version of the Chetak back in December 2023 but that variant as well as a new Premium one are going to be officially launched on January 9. We are likely to see a few more feature additions, better range and performance.
Matter’s Aera electric bike has been in the pipeline for quite some time. It aims to be a good alternative to a 150 cc commuter motorcycle and has a unique gearbox, something that one doesn’t find on any electrics.
The biggest electric launch perhaps of the year has to be Honda’s electric scooter, which we think might be called the e-Activa or Activa Electric. It is going to be a ground-up new product built in and for India specifically and will be exported afterwards to other countries across the world. Keeping the core Activa characteristics intact, like ease of usage and convenience, the Honda electric scooter is expected to be affordable and approachable as well.
Back in May 2022, TVS announced three new trims for its iQube electric scooter, and we are yet to see the top ST trim come to life. Given how the market has shaped up and with the lack of FAME-II subsidies coming into effect, we might see a revision in the three variants with some fresh new bits also in the mix. Also, the final form of the TVS X is yet to be seen as there were some areas that needed to be fixed, namely software and suspension stiffness.
Hero had showcased the Vida V1 Coupe in Europe a few months ago. It wasn’t a significantly different product but the V1 was looking more petite in the circumstances. Chances are the same modular option with backward compatibility will be introduced here in India as well.
After launching the Zulu late last year, Kinetic is preparing to add two more two-wheelers to its portfolio. The e-Luna moped has been under development for some time now, mainly geared towards the B2B market first. Kinetic will also have a performance electric scooter, not to the tune of the Ather 450X but more on the lines of the 450S. More details in this story.
Another electric scooter that has been running around the streets on test is the Suzuki Burgman Electric scooter. Suzuki had revealed a prototype version of it to the world at last year’s Japan Mobility Show (erstwhile Tokyo Motor Show). It has swappable batteries but the claimed range per charge is a measly 44 km. So, let's see how Suzuki adapts it for India.
Among Ola’s grand plans of electric domination were a few electric motorcycles. The prototypes of the same were shown through the course of 2023 and we think Ola might just get one of them into production in 2024. Which one? Your guess is as good as ours. But it is likely to be massy and commuter centric. So, a naked makes sense.
And finally, BMW might just take the plunge and introduce the CE02 funky little electric runabout in the country. After all, it is made at the TVS Hosur plant itself, alongside the X. And given it is a BMW product, it will be freaking expensive as well.
Besides these electrics, we shall also hope to see some more activity from Ultraviolette, Tork and Oben with small improvements for their existing products also being introduced through the year.
