Porsche has introduced a pioneering wireless charging pad for its upcoming Cayenne EV, marking the first manufacturer-backed inductive charging system in the market.
Officially dubbed the Porsche Wireless Charger (PWC), this technology promises to redefine EV convenience.
As per Porsche, PWC delivers charging speeds up to 11kW and operates efficiently across a wide temperature range, from -40 to 50 degrees Celsius.
The company asserts that the pad remains unaffected by debris like leaves or snow, boasting an efficiency rate of approximately 90%. This durability ensures reliable performance in varied conditions.
Charging is simple with the PWC. As drivers approach the pad, the car’s digital display switches to a camera feed with gridlines, guiding precise alignment and parking. The vehicle’s air suspension then lowers slightly, activating a magnetic field to initiate seamless electron transfer to the battery, enhancing user experience.
The 60mm tall, 50kg pad cannot be fully embedded in driveways or garages due to sensor requirements, but it functions independently without a wallbox.
Safety features include a foreign object detection system that halts charging if, for instance, a pet wanders onto the pad, resuming once clear.
The PWC integrates LTE and wireless LAN, allowing control via the My Porsche app for scheduling or preconditioning. Porsche notes that future faster charging will require hardware upgrades, not just software updates.
The PWC will be available globally next year alongside the Cayenne Electric, which offers around 400kW cabled charging and up to 1000 bhp in its top Turbo variant.
