Yamaha is clearly going for a more athletic electric scooter here, unlike utilitarian River Indie it is based on.
Yamaha’s upcoming electric scooter was spotted for the first time in Bengaluru being tested in real world conditions. Codenamed the RY01, the test mule was heavily camouflaged, but the fact that it is based on the River Indie could not be more apparent here.
Unlike the Indie, which boasts a butch and bulky design, Yamaha’s version of the same looks quite athletic in comparison. However, components like the swingarm, suspension, brakes and the 14-inch wheel set up, looks to be directly lifted off from the Indie.

Where the upcoming RY01 will stand on its own ground will be with its design. Yamaha has heavily revised the front apron section wherein it looks more angular. The headlight might look squarish, with the LED headlights stacked vertically. But the rear apron looks sporty. Will this design change eat into the massive underseat storage space or not remains to be seen. For reference, the River Indie gets 43-litres of boot space. All in all, the Yamaha RY01 might look very hefty, but there’s a distinct athletic appearance to it.
Beyond that, Yamaha seems to have used the same 6-inch LCD screen from the Indie from which we can concur that the connectivity features will also be more or less same, with more than the basics covered. We also expect Yamaha to retain the 4 kWh battery and 6.7 kW electric motor setup from the Indie, which is good for a top speed of 90 kmph, and an IDC-claimed range of 161 km in Eco mode.

We are still a few months away from Yamaha launching its debut electric scooter in India. But given that this will more or less be a River Indie with a different sporty body design, the main research work has already been done. So, sometime by the end of this year is when we reckon Yamaha will debut its all-electric two-wheeler in India.
