The electric vehicle sector in India continues to expand rapidly, supported by government incentives, improved charging infrastructure, and growing consumer awareness of environmental benefits.
The JMK Research and Analytics has reported that India registered sales of 1,86,678 electric vehicles in August 2025. While it does represent a strong growth in the electric mobility sector across multiple vehicle categories, the EV industry is still recovering from the rare earth magnet crisis, which had plagued several OEMs. Uttar Pradesh led the proceedings by registering 16.38% of the total registrations, followed by Maharashtra at 12.03% and Karnataka at 9.91%. Tamil Nadu accounted for 7.32% of sales, while Bihar contributed 5.83% to the national EV sales total.
Delhi recorded 5.82% of registrations, with Madhya Pradesh close behind at 5.63%. Kerala contributed 5.52%, Rajasthan 4.98%, and Assam 4.56% of the month's sales. Gujarat and Odisha recorded 3.39% and 3.09% respectively, whilst other states and territories combined for 15.55% of total registrations.
By category, electric two-wheelers dominated EV proceedings with 55.87% of all EV registrations in August. Electric three-wheelers accounted for 29.45% of sales, while electric cargo vehicles contributed 4.56% and electric buses just 0.21%. Electric cars represented 3.37% of registrations, with other vehicle categories making up 0.64%.
Monthly sales data shows significant fluctuation throughout the financial year, with peaks in March 2025 at 2,03,074 units and in October 2024 at 2,17,805 units. The August figure followed a dip in July 2025 when sales were at 1,88,602 units.
The electric vehicle sector in India continues to expand rapidly, supported by government incentives, improved charging infrastructure, and growing consumer awareness of environmental benefits. The record August figures suggest sustained momentum in the transition towards cleaner transport solutions across the country.
