Uttar Pradesh restricts EV subsidies to vehicles manufactured in the state from October 14, 2025, offering road tax and registration rebates until 2027, with the aim of boosting local manufacturing and jobs.
From October 14, 2025, Uttar Pradesh will restrict electric-vehicle (EV) incentives to models manufactured or assembled within the state. Under the revised scheme, only EVs built in UP will receive purchase subsidies, road-tax exemptions and registration-fee waivers.
This 100% rebate applies to vehicles both sold and registered in Uttar Pradesh between October 14, 2025, and October 13, 2027. The policy aims to bolster local production, generate employment and strengthen the state’s EV ecosystem under the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ campaigns.
Prospective buyers must ensure their EV bears a UP manufacturing or assembly certificate. Applications for subsidies are to be filed via the official EV Subsidy Portal, with final verification handled by the respective RTO. Only vehicles meeting the local-content criterion will qualify for full road-tax and registration-fee relief.
The policy change may limit consumers’ choice of EV models and increase upfront costs for those preferring out-of-state or imported vehicles. Buyers of popular brands manufactured elsewhere will no longer receive financial incentives, potentially affecting overall EV adoption rates in the short term.
Launched on October 14, 2022, the initial EV incentive scheme offered full exemption from road tax and registration fees for three years, supplemented by direct subsidies of up to Rs 20 lakh per vehicle, ranging from ₹5,000 for two-wheelers to ₹20 lakh for electric buses.
By October 13, 2025, over 17,600 vehicle owners had benefited, with approximately 38,300 applications pending. The new localisation clause underscores Uttar Pradesh’s transition from subsidy provider to EV-manufacturing hub, reinforcing its strategic role in India’s green-mobility drive.
