The year 2026 has started positively for VinFast, which has sold more than 200 electric cars so far.
In a key advancement for its India strategy, Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer VinFast has surpassed the 1,000-unit mark in cumulative electric car sales in the country -- a big milestone for a new entrant accomplished in approximately four months. The expansion comes as the company progressively increases its sales and service presence while reinforcing its charging infrastructure nationwide, ET Auto has reported.
The year 2026 has started positively for VinFast, which has sold more than 200 electric cars so far. The company has now emerged as the fourth major player in India's electric car market after Tata Motors, JSW MG Motor, and Mahindra Electric. In 2025, VinFast sold around 830 e-cars over a three-month period.
India's electric car market has expanded sharply over the past two years, with annual sales more than doubling to 1.76 lakh units in 2025 from 82,286 units in 2023. Sales are increasingly concentrated among a handful of established players.
VinFast entered the market in September 2025 with the launch of the VF6 compact electric SUV and the VF7 mid-size electric SUV. While volumes remain modest, new players are beginning to register measurable sales and establish a foothold in the competitive landscape, according to analysts at JMK Research.
VinFast, in particular, has shown early traction. Analysts attribute this to a combination of factors in its market entry strategy, including local manufacturing, rapid expansion of sales and service networks, and positioning in the right price band.
VinFast's first offerings in India, the VF6 and VF7, are priced in the ₹16 lakh-₹25 lakh range -- currently the most active segment of the electric passenger vehicle market. This band bridges mass-market EVs and premium luxury imports and has consistently accounted for a significant share of private electric car purchases in recent years.
The company operates an EV assembly plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, with an initial annual capacity of 50,000 vehicles, scalable to 150,000 units. VinFast's third manufacturing facility globally, the plant helps lower entry barriers, support competitive pricing, and position India as both a core market and a potential export hub.
Within four months of entering the market, VinFast has established over 25 dealerships and more than 80 service centres across multiple cities. Its network rollout has been faster than that of many recent EV entrants, underscoring a focus on early execution and readiness.
