Volkswagen has announced a special edition of its iconic hot hatch to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Golf GTI, and it's doing so in record-setting fashion. The Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50, built to mark the half-century milestone of the GTI nameplate, has become the fastest mass-produced Volkswagen to lap Germany’s famed Nürburgring Nordschleife, setting a benchmark time of 7:46.13 minutes.

The lap was completed by racing driver Benny Leuchter, a long-time Volkswagen development and motorsport driver. The time puts the front-wheel-drive hatchback in elite company and above its more performance-oriented stablemates, including the fourth-generation Golf R, which clocked a time of 7:47.31 on a slightly shorter version of the Nordschleife in 2022. What makes the GTI’s performance particularly noteworthy is that it remains front-wheel drive and is not backed by all-wheel traction like the R.

While Volkswagen has yet to disclose the full technical specifications of the GTI Edition 50, the automaker confirmed that it will be the most powerful GTI ever produced. The record-setting model was equipped with the optional Performance Package, a bundle that includes chassis upgrades, lightweight forged wheels, and a set of high-grip Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tyres. Leuchter credited this package as “the decisive factor” in the Nürburgring achievement, highlighting the synergy between power and precision chassis tuning that has long defined the GTI philosophy.

“The new Golf GTI Edition 50 is a statement with which Volkswagen expresses the pure GTI idea – the combination of superior drive power and highly precise chassis with front-wheel drive – more effectively than ever before,” Leuchter said in a company statement.

With the current front-wheel-drive lap record still held by the Honda Civic Type R at 7:44.881, the GTI’s time falls just short—yet stands as a reminder of what’s possible even without all-wheel drive or electrification.
