The electric GTI is expected to take cues from the upcoming ID.2 GTI, which will be the first performance-oriented EV in Volkswagen’s lineup.

Volkswagen has officially confirmed development of the first fully electric Golf GTI, marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of one of the world’s most iconic hot hatchbacks. Slated to launch in 2026, the electric GTI (informally dubbed "e-GTI") will be a cornerstone of Volkswagen’s broader electrification strategy and a test of how successfully performance can be translated into the electric era.

Since its debut in 1976, the Golf GTI has become synonymous with affordable performance and everyday usability. Transitioning the GTI badge to a battery-electric platform comes at a time when Volkswagen is aggressively expanding its EV portfolio, and according to CEO Thomas Schäfer, the expectations are high.

“This will be a monster car,” Schäfer told Auto Express, underlining the company’s ambition to retain the GTI’s identity despite the shift to electric propulsion. Development is already underway, with Schäfer confirming that prototype versions have been tested and that digital mock-ups of the car’s cabin and packaging are well advanced.

Although final specifications are still under wraps, Volkswagen has confirmed the new GTI will be front-wheel-drive, sticking to tradition even as its closest electric sibling—the ID.3 GTX—uses a rear-wheel-drive setup and offers 322 bhp. For comparison, the current petrol-powered Golf GTI makes 241 bhp from a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine. An electric GTI could match or exceed that figure, benefiting from an EV’s instant torque and precision control.

A more potent, all-wheel-drive electric Golf R is also in the pipeline. Schäfer noted that the company is working on this performance variant in parallel, suggesting a broader performance EV lineup under the Golf nameplate.

The new GTI will be underpinned by Volkswagen’s forthcoming SSP (Scalable Systems Platform), designed to serve as a foundation for everything from Skoda EVs to Bentleys and Lamborghinis. This modular platform will support shared hardware and software across brands, enabling economies of scale without compromising on product differentiation.

While Schäfer has driven prototypes and praised the handling and acceleration, he did not confirm whether features such as simulated gearshifts, artificial engine sounds, or drift modes—akin to those found in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N—will make it into production. Such additions may be more appropriate for the Golf R, which traditionally carries a more aggressive performance profile.

Styling-wise, the next-generation GTI is expected to follow Volkswagen’s usual evolutionary design approach. While renderings and early digital models exist, the final design has not yet been revealed. Familiarity and continuity will be key as the company attempts to transition long-time GTI customers into the electric era.

Volkswagen has committed to continuing production and updates for the current internal combustion Golf until at least 2030. This suggests that the electric GTI will initially coexist with petrol-powered models, giving buyers time to adapt to the new technology without abandoning the nameplate altogether.

The electric GTI is expected to take cues from the upcoming ID.2 GTI, which will be the first performance-oriented EV in Volkswagen’s lineup. Schäfer said the development of that car has influenced the e-GTI’s direction and engineering philosophy. The original Mk1 Golf GTI launched with 108 bhp from a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated engine. Nearly five decades later, the electric version is poised to deliver more than 300 bhp, nearly three times the output.
