While the first batch of the Golf GTI is already sold out, Volkswagen has yet to announce details about bookings for subsequent units.
Volkswagen is bringing its iconic performance hatchback, the Golf GTI, to the Indian market on May 26, marking a highly anticipated return for the GTI badge. Arriving as a completely built unit (CBU), the Golf GTI will cater to a niche audience of driving enthusiasts and is expected to be priced at over ₹50 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Golf GTI’s exterior stays true to its performance roots with a clean yet aggressive design. At the front, it features a honeycomb-pattern grille, GTI badging, and distinctive red accents—a signature of the GTI lineage. The bumper integrates five-segment LED lighting elements, while the illuminated VW logo adds a modern touch. Measuring nearly 4.3 metres in length, the hatchback is about the size of a compact SUV like the Taigun but with a sleeker, lower profile. It sits on 18-inch alloy wheels, and LED tail lamps, a roof-mounted spoiler, dual exhausts, and a shark fin antenna enhance the rear design.
Inside, the GTI blends retro performance cues with advanced tech. The interior features tartan-patterned sport seats, red accents, and GTI-specific digital graphics, reinforcing its sporty character. Taking centre stage is a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system powered by Volkswagen’s latest OS, complete with ChatGPT-enabled voice assistance. A 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, heads-up display, multi-zone climate control, powered and ventilated front seats, and ambient lighting round out a well-equipped, premium cabin.
Under the hood, the Golf GTI is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 261 bhp and 370 Nm of torque. Power is delivered to the front wheels via a 7-speed DSG (dual-clutch) transmission, propelling the car from 0–100 kmph in just 5.9 seconds. Handling is enhanced by progressive steering and an electronically controlled front-axle differential lock, ensuring responsive dynamics and grip under spirited driving.
Volkswagen has also equipped the GTI with a full suite of safety features. It includes electronic stability control (ESC), a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), a 360-degree camera, and an electronic parking brake.
While the first batch of the Golf GTI is already sold out, Volkswagen has yet to announce details about bookings for subsequent units. The GTI will go head-to-head with other premium performance hatchbacks like the MINI Cooper S and the upcoming Skoda Octavia RS.
