Volkswagen and Rivian’s RV Tech joint venture has grown to over 1,500 engineers and is advancing its SDV architecture ahead of winter testing in Q1 2026.
One year after its establishment, the joint venture between Volkswagen Group and Rivian, named RV Tech, claims to have made good progress in developing a next-generation software-defined vehicle (SDV) architecture.
As per an official statement, the collaboration is advancing rapidly toward enabling over-the-air updates, centralised computing, and enhanced digital features across future electric vehicles from both companies.
The SDV architecture, built on a modular zonal electronic system, replaces traditional distributed control units with powerful central computers. This allows for continuous software improvements without requiring service visits, supporting advanced driver assistance, infotainment, and vehicle personalisation.
The architecture will underpin Volkswagen Group’s upcoming SSP platform and Rivian’s future R2, R3, and R3X models.
Winter testing of reference vehicles from Volkswagen, Audi, and Scout brands is scheduled to begin in Q1 2026. These vehicles, equipped with the latest SDV hardware and software, will be evaluated under extreme cold conditions to validate system performance.
The Volkswagen ID.EVERY1 is expected to be the first Group model to feature the SDV architecture, with a global market launch planned for 2027.
RV Tech’s development team has grown to over 1,500 engineers and specialists across the United States, Canada, Sweden, Serbia, and a newly opened office in Berlin. The Berlin location strengthens coordination with Volkswagen Group’s European brands within the same time zone.
The joint venture continues to align development timelines with Volkswagen Group’s SSP platform and Rivian’s product roadmap, ensuring scalable, future-ready vehicle platforms for the global market.
