Volkswagen India will most likely bring the Tayron to our shores by late 2025 to compete against the Jeep Meridian, Skoda Kodiaq and even the Citroën C5 Aircross.
Volkswagen has officially introduced the all-new Tayron SUV, set to replace the outgoing Tiguan Allspace in the brand's lineup. Positioned between the Tiguan and the larger Touareg, the Tayron will be VW's second-largest SUV. However, what’s exciting is that Volkswagen India will most likely bring the Tayron to our shores by late 2025. It will compete with other premium SUVs such as the Jeep Meridian, Citroën C5 Aircross, and Skoda Kodiaq.
At launch, the Tayron will feature a mild-hybrid powertrain, but Volkswagen has ambitious plans for future powertrain offerings. The lineup will eventually include six different engine options, ranging from plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models to turbocharged petrol and turbodiesel variants. A key highlight of the PHEV models is the claimed all-electric range of up to 100 km, while a combined range of 850 km is anticipated before requiring refueling or recharging. Power outputs will vary across the range, with the entry-level mild-hybrid producing 148 bhp, and the more powerful PHEV variants pushing outputs between 204 bhp and 268 bhp.
Volkswagen's 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system will be available while most models in the Tayron lineup will come equipped with the reliable DSG automatic transmission. The Tayron also boasts a towing capacity of up to 2.5 tonnes.
The Tayron will eventually offer three trim levels: Life, Elegance, and R-Line. Currently, only the entry-level ‘Life’ variant is available. Even at this base level, the Tayron comes well-equipped with features such as 3-zone automatic climate control, ambient lighting in ten colours, and a multi-function steering wheel.
Volkswagen is focusing on comfort and practicality with the Tayron’s interior design. The SUV will be available in both 5- and 7-seat configurations, with the 5-seater offering a generous 885 litres of boot space. High-quality materials like microfibre and open-pore wood accents are used throughout the cabin, along with decorative trim for a more premium feel. The centrepiece of the dashboard is a 12.6-inch infotainment screen that integrates advanced technologies, including Volkswagen’s new ChatGPT-based voice assistant for a more interactive driving experience.
Safety is a priority for the Tayron, as Volkswagen includes a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems as standard. The package includes lane assist, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control, among other features.
Measuring 4800 mm in length, the Tayron is just 100 mm shorter than the larger Touareg. The Tiguan Allspace though measures 4821 mm in length. The exterior design is characterised by straight lines and a powerful stance, featuring Volkswagen’s signature LED Matrix headlights and illuminated badges on both the front and rear. The Tayron also sports a full-length rear light bar, a popular design element in modern SUVs. Buyers will have the option to choose between 17- and 18-inch alloy wheels.
