Volvo Car India has introduced its second electric vehicle (EV) in the Indian market, the Volvo C40 Recharge, at Rs. 61.25 lakh (ex-showroom, India) in a single, fully-loaded E80 trim. This new addition expands Volvo's electric lineup in India, joining the existing Volvo XC40 Recharge, and enters into competition with models like the Kia EV6 and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 in the Indian EV market. The C40 Recharge is a coupe SUV, constructed on Volvo's CMA platform. Notably, it will be imported into India as a completely built unit (CBU).
The C40 Recharge from Volvo takes a different approach to design compared to its rugged-looking counterpart, the XC40. One notable feature exclusive to the C40 Recharge in India is its Pixel LED headlights, setting it apart from other Volvo models. In order to create a coupe-like appearance, Volvo redesigned the rear of the C40 Recharge. The rear features slimmer tail lamps with a wider wraparound effect and new reverse lights. The LEDs extend into the tailgate, contributing to a wider appearance from the rear. Additionally, Volvo has incorporated a two-part spoiler on the C40 Recharge which includes one on the blacked-out boot lid and another on the roof with a twin-pod design. While the bumpers remain consistent with the SUV version, the overall rear design is busier and exudes a sportier look.
While the design serves as a notable distinguishing factor, the Volvo C40 Recharge still retains many elements from the XC40 Recharge. The dashboard design remains largely unchanged, featuring a 9.0-inch portrait-style touchscreen flanked by slim AC vents, wood inlays on the dashboard, and a fully digital instrument cluster. Volvo maintains its reputation for high-quality materials and impeccable fit and finish.
The Volvo C40 Recharge comes equipped with an Android-based infotainment system, offering direct access to Google Maps and Assistant, as well as access to various apps from the Play Store through an onboard e-SIM. Additional features include a panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charging, a 360-degree camera, and a comprehensive suite of sensor-based Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) technology, including Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities, making it a feature-packed vehicle.
In the Indian market, the Volvo C40 Recharge boasts a dual-motor configuration, with one motor on each axle, paired with a substantial 78 kWh battery pack, developing 405 bhp and 660 Nm. The claimed range for this electric vehicle stands at an impressive 530 km on a single charge according to the WLTP cycle. This substantial increase in range compared to the SUV's previously claimed 418 km can be attributed to the utilisation of a more advanced battery generation and improved aerodynamics.
Additionally, the Volvo C40 Recharge offers fast-charging capabilities using a 150 kW DC charger, which can replenish the battery from 0 to 100 per cent in just 27 minutes. This quick charging capability enhances the practicality and convenience of the electric vehicle, reducing downtime for recharging during longer journeys.
