Volvo Cars has officially announced that its highly anticipated all-electric EX60 SUV will be unveiled on January 21, 2026, in Stockholm, Sweden, through a livestreamed global event. The announcement marks a significant milestone in Volvo's electrification journey, as the EX60 becomes the company's first fully electric vehicle in the premium mid-size SUV segment.

The EX60 represents Volvo's strategic answer to the growing demand for electric luxury SUVs and will serve as the all-electric counterpart to the highly successful XC60, which recently became Volvo's best-selling model of all time with over 2.7 million units sold since 2008. Built on Volvo's ground-breaking SPA3 platform, the EX60 promises to deliver "a longer electric range than any Volvo car before it" along with a revolutionary user experience.

The new SUV will feature advanced technologies including structural battery integration, mega-casting construction methods similar to Tesla's approach, and Volvo's Superset technology stack that enables over-the-air updates. Production is set to commence in the first half of 2026 at Volvo's Torslanda plant in Gothenburg, Sweden

Competitive Landscape

The EX60 will enter a fiercely contested market dominated by established players including the BMW iX, Mercedes-Benz EQC, Audi Q8 e-tron, and Tesla Model Y. Industry comparisons suggest the EX60 will be positioned as a premium offering with an estimated starting price around $60,000, competing directly with luxury electric SUVs that currently range from 309-408 horsepower with driving ranges between 356-480 kilometres.

India Launch Prospects

Regarding the Indian market, Volvo's strategy appears mixed. While the company initially planned to go all-electric in India by 2030, recent statements indicate a more cautious approach. Jyoti Malhotra, MD of Volvo Car India, confirmed the company will continue introducing both electric and internal combustion vehicles, acknowledging that "adoption rates vary significantly across different regions".

Currently, Volvo holds a 22-23% share in India's luxury EV segment with two electric models, and the company expects luxury EVs to constitute 40% of the segment by 2030. However, no official confirmation has been made regarding the EX60's India launch timeline, as Volvo continues to assess market readiness and government policy developments in the country.
