X (formerly Twitter) has launched its "Community Notes" program in India, allowing users to fact-check tweets shared on the Elon Musk-owned micro-blogging platform.

Announced on Thursday via the Community Notes handle, the program aims to create a more informed online environment by enlisting contributors to write context notes for potentially misleading posts.

Community Notes is designed to combat misinformation by bringing in individuals from diverse backgrounds as note authors. Contributors can propose notes on tweets, which will be eligible for display if rated helpful by enough users.

X relies on the collective input of contributors from varied perspectives to assess content credibility. Notes that claim a post is not misleading provide additional context but will not be shown if rated unhelpful.

The platform says contributors who consistently agree or disagree in their ratings over time likely share similar or differing viewpoints. This approach allows the program to be community-run while ensuring different opinions are represented.

There are limits on how many notes contributors can propose daily to maintain quality. With Community Notes, X hopes to replicate its fact-checking system in India, which now has contributors in 69 countries.
