We expect the 3-cylinder-powered Yammie to command a steep ex-showroom price, just like its younger sibling, the Yamaha MT-03.
We already knew last year that Yamaha would expand its premium bike portfolio in India. Now that the brand has launched the Yamaha YZF-R3 and the MT-03, it is gearing up to introduce another bigger and more powerful naked middleweight streetfighter bike—the MT-09.
The Yamaha MT-09 that will make its way to our country will be the latest iteration of the naked sport bike unveiled as the 2024 model at EICMA 2023. As part of that update, the middleweight streetfighter debuts a new sharper design language that looks more on the lines of the MT-10. It starts from the front, which gets the new vertically stacked LED headlamp design flanked by LED DRLs. Consequently, the new Yamaha MT-09 looks more angular than before, at least from the front. The minimalistic, sleek tail section has remained similar but has been tweaked for a more sportier stance.

The change in body design is complimented by new hardware components. For starters, the 2024 Yamaha MT-09 equips Brembo brakes, which is a new addition. Meanwhile, the KYB-sourced front USD fork and mono shock have been tweaked to improve the spring rate and damping. Beyond that, mechanically, the Yamaha MT-09 continues to equip the same 890 cc, CP3 three-cylinder engine as before, which produces 117.3 bhp and 93 Nm. Thus, there’s no dearth of performance here.
However, one of the biggest improvements and most important features that the Yamaha MT-09 might bring to India will be the Iwata-based bikemaker’s debut semi-automatic transmission gearbox called Y-AMT. Yamaha debuted this new technology last month, and it is aimed to be simpler and more effective when compared to Honda's DCT gearbox. To learn more, tap the link here. Beyond that, the MT-09 also gets Yamaha’s new five-inch TFT dashboard with smartphone connectivity and navigation, along with three preset and two customisable ride modes.

While we are yet to confirm the exact launch date of the new Yamaha MT-09, we expect the bike to launch by the first half of September. And once launched, the Yamaha MT-09 is expected to be priced around ₹15 lakh. Yes, it will be quite an expensive affair; after all it will be imported to India as a completely built unit, just like the Yamaha YZF-R3 and MT-03.
