Keeping matters subtle and short, the accessories list will leave you a tad disappointed.

It’s been barely two days now that Yamaha has unveiled their latest sub-400cc duo to the Indian market – the R3 and MT-03 – at some ridiculously astonishingly high prices. Just like their Indian price tag, the accessories list of the Yamaha R3 and MT-03 now also feels a bit disappointing, especially when compared to their European counterparts.

What Are Our Options?

Commonly available with both the R3 and MT-03 is a rear seat cowl. Priced at Rs 7,500, the rear seat cowl is available in two colour options with the R3 - blue and black. The MT-03 is available in just black. The R3 also gets a windshield kit priced at Rs 8,200. The optional windshield is taller than the standard option available with the bike, which in turn should reduce the windblast more while touring.

What Are We Missing?

In European markets, the R3 is available with a quickshifter for starters. Something that seems like a big miss with the India-spec model. This is followed by add-ons like an Akrapovic slip-on carbon muffler, an Ohlins NIX 22 USD  cartridge kit, and Ohlins STX 46 gas-charged monoshock, a tank bag, and rear side panniers. Although the cumulative cost of these options would get you a new Triumph Speed 400 for sure, at least customers are spoilt for choice.

The options available with the MT-03 aid it to be more tourer friendly. These include the likes of heated grips, a flyscreen (blacked-out), a wireless charging module, soft side panniers, a rear luggage rack, and a saddle stay.

Why This Difference In Treatment?

The premium pricing of Rs 4.55 lakh and Rs 4.50 lakh (ex-showroom price) of the Yamaha R3 and MT-03, respectively, clearly sets the agenda for both these bikes. Enjoying a mass status quo like that of, for example, the KTM Duke 390/  RC 390 enjoys - is something that we gather Yamaha is not aiming with this duo. In addition to that, the Aprilia RS 457 priced at Rs 4.10 lakh makes the bargain all the more difficult.

So given its non-viable future with regards to sales, it would not make sense for a company to bring in additional armament that would just end up pushing the price tag of the bikes on par with a middleweight naked motorcycle like a Triumph Street Triple RS or the Kawasaki ZX-6R.
