The highly anticipated Yamaha YZF-R9 is officially confirmed to replace the iconic YZF-R6 in the World Supersport Championship starting 2025. This exciting news comes straight from Kervin Bos, Team Manager at Yamaha Ten Kate Racing, finally putting rumors to rest.
The switch stems from the emission challenges faced by the current YZF-R6, which has been moved down to track-only status since 2022. To remain competitive and comply with regulations, Yamaha is pivoting to the larger and more versatile MT-09 platform for the R9.
This means the R9 will pack a punch with the powerful 889cc triple-cylinder CP3 engine, known for its strong performance in the MT-09. To carve up the corners, the R9 will adopt a sportier stance with clip-on handlebars and rearset pegs, and the styling could be similar to that of the R7 and R1.
This strategic move aligns Yamaha with the ongoing trend in the Supersport class. Competitors like Ducati, Triumph, and MV Agusta have already transitioned from 600 cc bikes to larger-capacity machines, and the Yamaha R9 aims to keep Japanese giantat the forefront of the competition.
Development is in full swing, with intensive testing of the racing model underway at the Misano circuit in Italy. Additionally, Yamaha has secured the "YZF-R9" name and logo trademarks in multiple countries, further solidifying their commitment.
While an official launch date remains under wraps, speculations suggest a possible unveiling by the end of 2024, potentially at the EICMA motorcycle show. The arrival of the R9 marks a significant evolution in Yamaha's Supersport lineup, and motorcycle racing fans worldwide are eagerly awaiting its debut. Stay tuned for further updates as this highly anticipated machine roars closer to its official release!
