It took the Yamaha R15 nameplate 16 years of production to breach the 10 lakh sales milestone.
The Yamaha R15 needs no introduction. India’s first proper, fully-faired, 150 cc sport bike, which has been in production for the past 16 years. In between which it has undergone several noticeable upgrades, and a new and improved body design has always been one of its key highlights. All of which has finally helped the badge reach a significant production milestone of one million units, marking a major achievement for the Japanese manufacturer's Indian operations.
The milestone was achieved at Yamaha's Surajpur manufacturing facility, with over 90 per cent of these motorcycles sold in the domestic market. The remaining units were exported to various global markets, reinforcing India's position as a crucial manufacturing hub for Yamaha.
Since its introduction in 2008, the R15 has undergone several generational changes, each bringing significant technological advancements into the fray too. The journey began with the R15 V1, which introduced features like a liquid-cooled engine and Deltabox frame. This was followed by notable improvements in different areas with every generation, from the addition of an aluminium swingarm to the introduction of Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) and Assist & Slipper Clutch technologies. The latest iteration, the R15 V4 launched in 2021, features modernity like traction control and a quick shifter, and a TFT display with smartphone connectivity as well that is available with the R15 M.
“The R15 embodies Yamaha’s Racing DNA with cutting-edge technology, thrilling design, and unmatched performance. With every iteration of the R15, we have elevated the riding experience, making the R15 the top choice for young enthusiasts. We extend our immense gratitude to our customers for their unwavering trust and to our employees for their dedication, which have been instrumental in achieving this landmark. Yamaha remains dedicated to shaping the future of performance motorcycling, ensuring the R15 continues to inspire riders for generations to come,” concluded Itaru Otani, Chairman, India Yamaha Motor Group of Companies
