A Sumo wrestler in a racing jacket. That's what best describes the GLS AMG Line, but don't be surprised by the looks. It may look big, but there are a lot of secrets it holds close to its chest. Our review tells all.

In the realm of luxury SUVs, where presence is paramount and subtlety takes a backseat, the Mercedes-Benz GLS AMG Line arrives not just as a vehicle but as a bold declaration. It’s more like a sumo wrestler wearing a racing jacket; this formidable machine redefines what it means to be a full-size luxury SUV.

Exterior: The AMG Body Kit

If the standard GLS already commanded attention, the AMG Line amplifies its imposing stature significantly. This isn't merely an aesthetic upgrade; it's a complete transformation. The new body kit features larger air intakes on the bumper, which are not just for show but contribute to the vehicle's assertive demeanour. Complementing this are the body-coloured wheel arches and side sills, replacing the conventional black plastic with an uninterrupted flow of luxury down to the ground.

The new 21-inch alloy wheels sit perfectly in the arches, giving the GLS an even more confident, planted look.

The wheels are a significant highlight, with new 21-inch alloy wheels perfectly filling out the arches, adding to the vehicle's commanding road presence. Further enhancing its aggressive yet sophisticated look is the standard AMG Night Package. This package meticulously blacks out elements like the ORVMs (Outside Rear View Mirrors), roof rails, and window line. Even the slats and grille receive the blackout treatment, giving the GLS a striking "goth" aesthetic that it undeniably pulls off. The overall effect is one of undeniable luxury, with an added edge of sportiness.

The facelift brings new LED taillights with a sharp three-point signature, adding a modern touch to the rear.

Interior: AMG's Signature Inside

The AMG treatment extends seamlessly into the cabin, where the overall design maintains Mercedes' renowned level of luxury, enhanced by subtle yet significant AMG touches. The moment you step in, your hands are drawn to the three-spoke AMG steering wheel, distinguished by its flat bottom.

The cabin gets Nappa leather, AMG pedals, and a mix of leather, gloss black, and brushed aluminum for a premium feel.

Your feet are not left out of the luxury experience, appreciating the aluminium finish on the pedals and the exclusive AMG branding on the floor mats. While the dashboard design remains unchanged, these thoughtful details ensure that the AMG exclusivity is felt throughout the interior.

For rear-seat occupants, the GLS AMG Line continues to offer a wealth of features designed for comfort and entertainment, ensuring that the luxury experience is not limited to the driver.

Engine and Performance

Beyond its luxurious appointments, the Mercedes-Benz GLS AMG Line truly comes alive when its 3-litre 6-cylinder diesel engine is unleashed. This powerplant delivers an exhilarating driving experience, leaving no doubt about its capabilities. Paired with a smooth 9-speed automatic gearbox, the power delivery is seamless and consistently available.

While a petrol version is available, our drive was with the diesel-powered GLS AMG Line.

Despite its considerable size, which is comparable to a baby elephant, this SUV is surprisingly agile and can hustle. The numbers speak for themselves: it accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in a brisk 6.1 seconds and can reach a top speed of 250 kmph. This impressive performance is further augmented by a 48V mild hybrid Integrated Starter Generator, which contributes to the overall power output. While the petrol variant, also featuring a 3-litre 6-cylinder engine, was not driven, its 0-100 kmph timing is identical to the petrol version.

Pricing and Competition

The Mercedes-Benz GLS AMG Line comes with a premium that reflects its enhanced features and exclusivity. The GLS 450 AMG Line (petrol) is priced at ₹1.40 crore (ex-showroom India), while its diesel counterpart, the GLS 450d AMG Line, costs ₹1.43 crore (ex-showroom India). This means the petrol variant is ₹3 lakh more expensive than the standard GLS 450, and the diesel is ₹1 lakh dearer than the regular GLS 450d. For this additional investment, buyers gain access to all the visual enhancements, interior upgrades, and the undeniable exclusivity that comes with the AMG Line. It's akin to investing in a designer suit; you're paying for the meticulous cut, the quality fabric, and the prestigious label.

The grin says it all, this SUV is genuinely fun to drive.

In the highly competitive heavyweight luxury SUV segment, the GLS AMG Line faces off against formidable rivals such as the BMW X7, Range Rover, and the Audi Q8. While the BMW X7 offers its own blend of luxury and performance, and the Audi Q8 brings a unique coupe-like styling with a sophisticated interior, the GLS AMG Line carves out its niche by offering a distinctive fusion of AMG flair and classic Mercedes luxury. Interestingly, the GLS AMG Line is priced lower than the top-end BMW X7, though it is more expensive than the base variant of the Audi Q8.

Verdict

The Mercedes-Benz GLS AMG Line is unequivocally a "statement of intent". It is designed for those discerning individuals who seek the pinnacle of luxury SUV comfort and spaciousness, combined with a potent dose of sportiness and visual aggression. It succeeds in ticking all the essential boxes: providing ample space, unparalleled comfort, and exhilarating performance. Large, powerful, and undeniably attention-grabbing, the GLS AMG Line certainly knows how to make an unforgettable entrance. It is a compelling choice for anyone looking for an SUV that doesn't just transport but truly makes a statement on the road.
