We got behind the wheel of this highly anticipated electric elephant, and the experience? Let's just say it's as complex as Mumbai traffic.
Move over autorickshaws, make way for the Silicon Valley SUV! After years of anticipation (and Elon Musk tweets that faded into the digital ether), the Tesla Model Y has finally touched down on Indian soil. We got behind the wheel of this highly anticipated electric elephant, and the experience? Let's just say it's as complex as Mumbai traffic. Buckle up for the full lowdown.
At first glance, the Model Y is unmistakably Tesla. Think of a Model 3 that hit the gym – slightly taller, slightly wider, but retaining those clean, minimalist lines and the iconic grille-less face (it doesn't need to breathe!). It's undeniably modern, though some might find its simplicity a bit ‘plain dosa’ compared to flashier rivals.
Size Matters: It slots into the mid-size SUV segment (4,790 mm L x 2,129 mm W x 1,624 mm H), comparable to a Hyundai Tucson but with a swoopier roofline.
Practical Powerhouse: Ground clearance is decent for city use, though rough patches demand caution. Where it truly shines is storage: a massive 938-litre boot plus a 117-litre "frunk" (front trunk) – perfect for family getaways or bulk shopping.
Open the door, and the minimalist theme continues – aggressively. Slide into the driver's seat and... where are all the buttons? Climate control? Screen. Radio? Screen. Driving modes? Screen. Even opening the glovebox requires a tap on the...
The Dominant Display: The glorious, crisp, iPad-like 15.4-inch central touchscreen is the brain of the operation. It's responsive and feature-packed, but does controlling everything via touch become a distraction? You tell us in the comments!
Rear Seat Tech: Surprise! There's a second screen – nestled between the front seats for rear passengers. It's not just for HVAC; it handles video, games, and apps, keeping backseat riders entertained.
Space & Airiness: Legroom is excellent front and back. The panoramic glass roof bathes the cabin in light, creating an airy feel (though Mumbai summers might test that perk!). Seating is comfy for two adults in the rear; the middle passenger contends with a floor hump.
Press the accelerator, and the magic of instant electric torque hits. Even the base Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) version is quick:
Performance Punch: 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds (single motor, 295 bhp, 420 Nm). Top speed? 217 km/h – good luck finding space for that in city limits! It's silent, smooth, and glides over decent tarmac.
Reality Check: Our limited Mumbai drive included inevitable potholes. The Model Y handles bumps decently thanks to its weight and low-slung battery (aiding stability), but sharp craters send a noticeable jolt through the cabin. City manoeuvrability, however, is impressive for its size.
Tesla's tech is its crown jewel. Watching the system process Mumbai's chaotic traffic was fascinating.
The Eyes: Eight cameras power Tesla's advanced driver-assistance systems.
Autopilot Limbo: The full Autopilot suite (a Rs 6 lakh option) remains inactive in India, awaiting regulatory approval. Its effectiveness here is a big question mark.
ADAS Advantage: What you do get now is impressive: Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, and clear Lane Watch cameras that brilliantly show who's trying to cut you off. The ADAS suite is genuinely next-level.
Tesla offers two Model Y variants in India:

Being a CBU (Completely Built Unit) import means hefty duties, reflected in the price:
At this premium price point, expectations are sky-high. You get cutting-edge tech, strong performance, and the undeniable Tesla badge. However, you also face:
The Model Y battles the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Volvo XC40 Recharge, BMW iX1, Mercedes EQB, and BYD Sealion. Many rivals offer more established networks or perceived luxury at similar (or lower) prices.
The Tesla Model Y is undeniably a fantastic electric car. It delivers a superb driving experience, revolutionary tech, and that coveted Tesla aura. It truly feels like the future has arrived.
However, its Indian debut is complicated. As a CBU import, it carries a significant price premium. You're paying for the brand, the ground-breaking software, and the privilege of being an early Tesla adopter in India. Factor in the nascent charging infrastructure, limited service centres, and fierce premium EV competition, and the value proposition becomes less clear-cut.
The Electric Elephant has landed, but whether it conquers the Indian jungle depends heavily on Tesla's commitment to expanding infrastructure and support, alongside evolving customer priorities: ultimate tech and brand cachet versus established luxury, features (like CarPlay), and service peace of mind.
