How to get RTO Mumbai Driving License Renewal?

The validity of an RTO Driving License is up to 20 years. An expired driving license is not valid in any situation. It can be renewed if any of the following has occurred:

  1. If the license expires

  2. If the holder reaches the age of 50 years

Carrying an expired license is as good as not having the license at all. One will have to pay a fine amount as per The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The process of renewing an RTO driving license is easier than getting a fresh Driving license issued from the RTO.

It is possible to renew the driving license from an RTO office in Mumbai through online and offline modes. Visit an RTO office with the required details and documents if you wish to personally visit the Regional Transport Office.

After selecting Maharashtra as your state, click on Apply Online > Services on Driving License. You will be redirected to an online application form i.e. Form 9. Fill this form with complete details. You can collect the hard copy of the form from the nearest RTO also.

Documents Required for DL Renewal

As mentioned earlier, the process of renewing a driving license is easier than acquiring a new license. This is reflected in the set of required documents as well, you do not need a bunch of hard copies for renewing the Driving License. Carry/upload the following documents for the renewal:

  • Duly filled Form 9 i.e. application form

  • Form 1A duly filled by a certified doctor (If the applicant is above the age of 40 years)

  • Original expired driving license

  • Passport size photographs

  • Aadhar card

Types of Driving License

A driving license will be issued only after the submission of related documents and a physical test. One should receive the original driving license via post within 20 to 30 days after passing the driving test at the corresponding RTO.

Two-wheeler vehicles (with and without gears)

These bikes are classified as non-transport vehicles. The minimum age required to apply for a driving license for riding these two-wheelers is 18 years.

Private Four-wheeler vehicle (geared/automatic)

To drive a private four-wheeler one should be 18 years old only then they will be issued a driving license. These cars have a white number plate with black alphanumeric registration number in an embossed fashion.

Commercial Four-wheeler vehicle (geared/automatic)

The rules for obtaining a commercial driving license are stricter as compared to a license for a private vehicle. The applicant’s age should be more than 21 years. They should have at least one year of experience in driving a private vehicle. Also, when driving a commercial vehicle, the driver should always carry a fitness certificate.

Covid-19: Maharashtra Suspends LL Tests at RTOs

– March 23, 2020

The government of Maharashtra has suspended all Learner’s Licence tests at all RTOs in the wake of the rising coronavirus cases in the state. The state Transport Commissioner asked RTOs also to stop having any camps at the tehsil level. He also said instructed RTOs to cut down appointments to 10% till the end of March 2020. The circular also states that DL renewal, re-registration of vehicles and fitness certificates and permits can continue until the end of the month; however, vehicle transfer and hypothecation should be deferred. The circular also states that RTO inspectors to wear masks and other safety gears while conducting fitness tests.
