Currently, Ola is undertaking trial runs by equipping this new type of cell with its two-wheelers.

Ola Electric is all set to join an exclusive group of electric vehicle manufacturers in the world by starting commercial usage of its 4680 battery cells. Currently undergoing trial runs in Ola S1s, these cells have been designed and engineered in-house by Ola Electric’s subsidiary, Ola Electric Mobility.

Viewed as a game-changer by global battery markets, 4680 battery cells are a new kind of cylindrical lithium-ion cell and it gets its name from its dimensions which are 46 mm in diameter and 80 mm in height. Given its larger dimensions, 4680 battery cells allow for more energy storage while handling heat more efficiently, thus making it ideal for high-performance applications. Tesla was one of the first adopters of this new type of cell, moreover, it was the Austin-based company that patented this cell for the first time. And it has been using these cells with the Model Y since 2021.

Ola

As for Ola, it is developing the cell at it’s Gigafactory which currently has a production capacity of 1.4 GWh, and by October, Ola plans to ramp it up to 5 GWh.

Now, Ola Electric might not have any high-performance two-wheelers in its portfolio yet. However, the brand is working on introducing high-performance electric motorcycles, electric cars, and commercial three-wheelers very soon. These would be ideal platforms for the brand to equip its 4680 cells.

The company has yet to confirm whether the existing S1 scooters will also be upgraded with these new cells. We are also awaiting confirmation as to when Ola will officially commence the production of its indigenously produced 4680 cells.
