Hyundai Motors has been known for launching some of the most reliable and competitively priced vehicles in the Indian automobile market. Its Grand i10 model gained massive popularity in the hatchback segment, launched in 2013. This model had all those features that an Indian driver would want and need to ensure a smooth driving experience. Its blend of design and comfort features at an attractive price made it a go-to model for every lifestyle. 

Nevertheless, this model was discontinued and facelifted with more advanced features and specific design changes. Additionally, it was renamed the Grand i10 Nios and launched in 2020. Hyundai Motors has always satisfied potential automobile purchasers with its design and appearance. The Grand i10's design and style aspects reflect modernity. The previous model featured a conventional style, updated to a sensual design in the facelift version.

Old Grand i10 

The front of the Grand i10 features a new 'cascading grille' design, a revamped upper grille, and a modified bumper with a new fog light surround and all-new LED DRLs. The new Grand i10 Nios has a design that looks more stylish and energetic than the old model. The front part of the car shows a more prominent, bigger cascading grille and slimmer and sharper headlamps. It has strong lines on the body, which make it look sportier and tougher. The body shape is more aerodynamic, with strong character lines and a slightly longer wheelbase for better stability. 

At the back of the Nios are new taillights and an improved bumper that looks nicer compared to the plainer rear of the earlier model. The previous model appeared outdated regarding interior design and comfort features, but its facelift version received significant enhancements. 

Old Grand i10

Stepping inside the old Grand i10, the cabin felt open and high-quality. The seat covers, plastic parts on the dashboard or doors, buttons, even the touchscreen, etc., gave a nice feeling. It had a dual-colour theme, four AC vents on the dashboard, a deep-set instrument panel, and a three-spoke steering wheel with large multi-function buttons. The gear-shift lever was also high-mounted. The centre console sticks out, but it has a 7.0-inch touchscreen display and a fully automatic climate control unit.

The front seats were very comfortable, and the padding was satisfactory. The seats were slightly contoured to give a snug feeling, and the driver seat was adjustable. But there was one problem—they built the headrests into the seats, which made them look strange in a cabin that otherwise felt very high-quality, and they limited how much you could adjust for shorter or taller people.

People sitting in the rear seats of the Grand i10 found it comfortable. Even though the cabin space can fit three people, there is an issue with space due to a raised centre tunnel and the rear AC vent console, which makes less room for the person in the middle seat. 

The lack of a headrest (while the other two passengers had adjustable ones) and only a lap belt (the others get three-point seat belts) make this position less safe. The space for legs and knees was enough even for tall people, but it could have been better in its class. The luggage compartment had a 256-litre capacity.

New Grand i10 Nios

The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios has a spacious interior and many features that make driving easy and comfy. Inside the car is a mix of black and beige colours that look good together. The materials used are high quality and soft to the touch, which makes it seem fancy. The seats have good padding and give optimal support, even for long trips.

The inside of the Grand i10 Nios looks clean and high-end, featuring new seat covers with 'Nios' written on them. The cabin still feels spacious due to its light-coloured interior design. The hatchback’s inside will make you feel luxurious with top-notch fit, finish, and plastic quality.

The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios's dashboard is neatly arranged, with a modern and straightforward touchscreen infotainment system that works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Inside the car are several storage spaces, like a glove box, door pockets, and cup holders, making storing items while travelling easy. The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios has a nicely designed and comfy hatchback interior that provides convenience and comfort.

The old Grand i10’s interior is simple, using basic materials and a practical design. However, the new Grand i10 Nios has many improvements in its interior. The Nios has a more modern dashboard, an upgraded touchscreen infotainment system, better ergonomics, and high-quality materials. 

The design looks more sociable, with two-tone colours and ambient lighting to make it feel premium. The seats are more comfortable, with improved cushioning and support. Performance and Handling of Old and New Grand i10

The performance and handling of the old Grand i10 model were likely easy and light, which made it ideal for urban environments. However, the new Grand i10 Nios model has an enhanced engine and more refined handling. There is a significant difference in their engine specs, however, as described below- 

Old Grand i10 

The Hyundai Grand i10 had two engine options: a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder, normally aspirated petrol engine with a capacity of 1197 cc and a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox. The second engine choice was a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine of 1186 cc capacity, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The only time you feel the vibrations from the engine is when you turn it off; the cabin rattles violently. It delivers a power output of 65.39 - 81.86 bhp and 190.24 Nm - 113.75 Nm torque, depending on the engine option. It offers a mileage of 17 to 24 kmpl.

The Hyundai Grand i10's suspension was soft enough, but it felt right. The suspension always operates quietly, allowing only the worst bumps inside. The balance of suppleness and hardness ensures that the ride is never unpleasant, which, paired with the minimal engine noise and vibrations, makes the Grand i10's cabin pleasant. 

The steering is light to use, and paired with the narrow turning radius; the Grand i10 is a practical city car. The mild steering on the highway reduces confidence, but the suspension and brakes (with ABS) function well. 

New Grand i10 Nios

The 1.2 l Kappa petrol and 1.2 l Bi-Fuel (petrol plus CNG) engines are now on sale. The engine is rated at 67.72 - 81.8 bhp and 113 Nm of torque, and it comes with either a five-speed manual or an AMT gearbox. CNG comes with a manual stick as standard. The difference here is that this engine is now E20 (ethanol 20% mix) and BS6 Phase 2 certified. It offers a mileage of 16 to 18 kmpl.

The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios is an easy-going and straightforward car to operate. It has smooth acceleration and a pleasant ride on slow city roads. Its ride quality is also superb since it absorbs the majority of city undulations and low speeds. Even as the pace increases, the suspension effectively absorbs the shocks, although you may feel large potholes or undulations. The back passengers may notice a slight bounce when the terrain changes.

Regarding safety and technology, the facelift model showcased a significant improvement. Here’s a quick comparison:

Old Grand i10

The Hyundai Grand i10 came with a driver-side airbag, which is standard across the lineup. Safety features on the top-of-the-line Asta model included twin front airbags, ABS, impact-detecting door-unlock, rear defogger, and rear parking sensors with cameras. The Hyundai Grand i10, for the price, provided fewer safety features.

The Grand i10 had basic LED DRLs mounted low on the front bumper near the fog lights. These were bright and performed well.

The Grand i10's equipment included a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment screen with smartphone connectivity via MirrorLink. The screen supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for enhanced convenience. It also features a back-parking camera with a guided display.

Increased safety is one of the most significant improvements to the facelifted Grand i10 Nios. Six airbags—driver, passenger, side, and curtain airbags—are now standard. Safety elements include electronic stability control, hill hold assist, and tyre pressure monitoring. Hyundai might have addressed the issue of ISOFIX anchorages, which are still not standard and are only available in the top-spec model.

Hyundai automobiles are jam-packed with equipment, and the Nios is well-equipped compared to its competitors in terms of price range. The standout features are a smooth-running eight-inch touchscreen display, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a wireless charger, automatic air conditioning, and rear air vents. New features such as automated headlights, cruise control, a revised instrument cluster, a USB Type-C fast charger, and blue footwell ambient lighting increase convenience and make sitting more comfortable. 

However, key features are lacking, such as LED headlights, adjustable front headrests, and a rear centre armrest, which would have improved the package even further.

The old Grand i10 offers basic safety and tech features like dual airbags, ABS, and rear parking sensors. It also has a straightforward infotainment system and manual AC but few options for connecting devices. On the other hand, the new Grand i10 Nios offers much better safety and tech features. 

They come with six airbags, ABS and EBD, a rear camera with guidelines, parking sensors, and ISOFIX mounts for child seats. For technology features, an up-to-date touchscreen system works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. These improvements provide better protection and new, advanced conveniences, which make the new models much more attractive.
