Tesla Launch in India: Key Highlights
Tesla has officially entered the Indian automotive market with the launch of the Model Y. This is the first and the only Tesla vehicle currently available for booking in the country. It is being offered in two variants - Standard RWD and Long Range RWD - both featuring Tesla’s signature tech, safety features, and minimalist design.
Tesla opened its first showroom in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), inside Maker Maxity Mall. This marks a significant milestone, especially after years of speculation, regulatory discussions, and anticipation among Indian EV enthusiasts.
As of now, Tesla has confirmed that it will sell Model Y exclusively, with deliveries expected to begin in the third quarter.
Why Tesla Car Price is Higher In India
The Model Y is currently priced between ₹59.89 lakhs and ₹67.89 lakhs (ex-showroom), depending on the variant chosen. While the pricing firmly positions Tesla Model Y in the premium EV segment, many potential buyers are wondering why Tesla costs significantly more in India than in other countries.
One key reason behind Tesla's higher price in India is the country’s steep import duties on electric vehicles. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously acknowledged this, stating that while the company is keen on entering the Indian market, high tariff structures have made it difficult to offer competitive pricing.
As reported by Bloomberg, six Tesla Model Y units have already been shipped to India from Tesla’s Shanghai plant. However, these vehicles are being imported as Completely Built Units (CBUs), which attract a 70% to 100% import duty under current Indian regulations.
Due to this, buyers in India could be paying higher than the car’s standard international pricing, even before optional features are added. The combination of shipping costs, duties, and registration fees significantly impacts the final on-road price in India.
While this pricing structure places the Model Y firmly in the premium EV category, discussions are ongoing around potential revisions to EV import policies, which could influence Tesla’s future pricing and localisation plans.
Tesla Model Y Price Comparison: US, China, Germany & India
The pricing of the Model Y in India has drawn comparisons with Tesla’s global markets. According to pricing data from Tesla’s official website (as reported by Reuters), the Model Y is listed in India at a starting price of approximately ₹59.87 lakhs, or around $69,770 based on current exchange rates.
Here’s how the Indian pricing stacks up against other major markets:
Country | Local Price | Approx. USD Equivalent |
United States | $44,990 | - |
China | 263,500 yuan | ~$36,700 |
Germany | 45,970 euros | ~$53,700 |
India | ₹59.89 lakh | ~$69,770 |
As shown above, the Model Y India pricing is higher than in key international markets. This difference is largely attributed to import duties, logistics, and the absence of local manufacturing. However, it reflects Tesla’s strategic entry into a premium segment, with pricing aligned to current import structures.
