Tesla’s India Debut Begins with Model Y

Tesla has officially launched its Model Y in India, marking the brand’s long-awaited entry into the world’s third-largest auto market. The electric SUV arrives in two variants—Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and Long Range AWD—with ex-showroom prices starting at ₹59.89 lakh and ₹67.89 lakh, respectively. For premium EV buyers, this is Tesla’s first real test against rivals like BYD, Kia, and BMW.

Tesla Model Y Price and Variants

Let’s start with what matters most - the price. Tesla hasn’t held back when it comes to variety. There are four variants available, all in a rear-wheel-drive layout. The difference mainly comes from the battery size and a few added features.

Variant

Battery

Claimed Range

Ex-Showroom Price

Model Y RWD (Base)

60 kWh

500 km

₹59.89 lakh

Model Y Long Range RWD

75 kWh

622 km

₹67.89 lakh

NoteTesla’s Autopilot (semi-autonomous driving) system is not standard in India. It’s available as an optional add-on for ₹6 lakh.

Exterior Design

From the outside, the Model Y doesn’t look aggressive, and that’s part of its appeal. It’s smooth, aerodynamic, and functional. Tesla doesn’t believe in unnecessary sharp edges, and it shows.

Exterior bits worth noting:

  • Up front, there’s a full-width LED light bar that gives it a signature Tesla face. The headlamps are positioned lower, right on the bumper, and are outlined by neat air vents. It’s minimal, but it doesn’t feel bare.

  • Move to the side and you’ll notice how tidy everything looks. The flush-fitting door handles sit flat against the body, helping reduce drag.

  • There’s a subtle crease running across the profile, and the glasshouse area feels large, giving it a lighter look. The 19-inch aero wheels aren’t just for show—they also help improve efficiency.

  • At the back, the roof gently slopes down into a ducktail-style spoiler. The LED tail-lamps span the width of the rear, and the dual-tone finish on the bumper gives it some character without disrupting the overall flow.

Interior and Features

Open the door, and things feel different. There's no clutter, no heavy dashboard - just a large touchscreen in the centre and a steering wheel. It might surprise you at first, but it grows on you quickly. Everything is controlled via the screen, but it doesn’t feel complicated once you get used to it.

Notable features:

  • Five-seater configuration
  • The ultra-responsive 15.4-inch touchscreen sits at the centre of your driving experience
  • Clean, open layout with lots of legroom
  • An 8-inch touchscreen gives access to second-row passengers
  • Panoramic glass roof
  • Wireless charging and multiple USB-C ports
  • 2130+ litres of storage
  • Foldable and heated rear seats
  • 9-speaker sound system

It’s futuristic without being overly extravagant. The glass roof adds a light and airy feel, which is especially nice during long drives.

Performance

Tesla cars have always been about performance that doesn’t scream, and the Model Y follows that principle. There is no engine sound, just clean acceleration.

  • 0 to 100 km/h in as quick as 5.9 seconds (varies by variant)
  • Power output goes up to 335 bhp
  • Rear-wheel drive offers balanced handling

Safety Features

Tesla takes safety seriously. Though local crash test data isn’t out yet, the car’s safety record in other markets is solid.

Standard safety gear includes:

  • Seven airbags
  • Emergency braking
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Lane assist
  • Collision warning
  • Front-facing cameras
  • Dog Mode keeps the cabin cool and safe for your pet while you're away
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Lane Departure Avoidance

These features are backed by Tesla’s ADAS system, which works quietly in the background to help you stay in control.

Battery Options and Range

The Tesla Model Y is available in two battery options - 60 kWh and 75 kWh. Depending on which you choose, you’ll get a different experience when it comes to how often you’ll need to charge.

Battery

Power

Range

60 kWh

235 bhp

500 km

75 kWh

335 bhp

622 km

For most Indian users, especially in metros, the 500 km range should do just fine. The larger battery is more suited for those who travel frequently or prefer not to think about charging every other day.

Charging Options

As of now, Tesla’s charging network is limited in India. However, the Model Y supports standard Type 2 and CCS fast charging, which are becoming easier to find in cities.

Expected experience:

  • DC fast charging (10 to 80%) in about 15 minutes (approx)
  • AC home charging takes several hours (overnight top-up)
  • Regenerative braking helps recover power on the go

The infrastructure isn’t perfect yet, but it’s improving. Plus, Tesla is likely to expand its own network soon.

Tech

Tesla has built a reputation on smart features that actually help, not just flashy gimmicks. The Model Y Tesla stays true to that by giving you tools that simplify the experience.

What stands out:

  • Autopilot for assisted driving on highways
  • Over-the-Air (OTA) updates to add new features over time
  • App-based remote access for unlock, location, and AC control
  • Voice-activated controls for music, navigation, and more

The idea is to keep improving the car even after you’ve bought it - something most brands don’t offer.

Tesla Model Y Colour Options

Choosing a car colour isn’t just about looks - it’s personal. Some prefer something subtle, while others want a finish that stands out on every drive. The Model Y doesn’t disappoint on that front. It comes in a range of shades that are both elegant and eye-catching, depending on what you’re into.

Here are the colours you can choose from:

  • Glacier Blue: A cool, confident shade of blue that isn’t too loud but definitely gets noticed. It brings a refreshing vibe, especially under natural light.

  • Diamond Black: Sleek and classic. This all-black look gives the Model Y a clean, premium edge. Ideal for anyone who prefers a sharp and understated appearance.

  • Pearl White Multi-Coat: White has always been a safe choice, but this one has depth. The multi-coat finish adds a subtle sheen that pairs nicely with the glass roof.

  • Ultra Red: Bold and expressive, Ultra Red adds character to the Model Y without feeling over the top. If you like making a statement, this one fits the bill.

  • Quicksilver: Somewhere between silver and grey, this shade gives off a polished, futuristic vibe. It’s modern, clean, and works well in both city and highway settings.

There are a few good electric SUVs already in the Indian market. So, how does the Model Y hold up?

While some rivals offer more features or more airbags, Model Y strikes a balance between tech, usability, and long-term support through software.

Tesla Model Y Warranty Coverage

Tesla offers solid warranty coverage on the Model Y to give buyers extra peace of mind.

  • Vehicle Warranty: 4 years or 80,000 km, whichever comes first
  • Battery and Drive Unit Warranty: 8 years or 1,92,000 km, whichever comes first

This dual-layer coverage helps ensure you're protected both in terms of general ownership and the long-term performance of key EV components.

Tesla Model Y Booking and Delivery

Bookings for the Model Y in India can be made directly through Tesla’s official website. The process is straightforward - select your variant, choose the colour, add any optional features like Autopilot, and confirm your booking with an initial payment.

Deliveries for the base variant are expected to roll out in this quarter. The Long-Range variant deliveries are expected to begin in October this year. Timelines may vary depending on location, variant availability, and customisations selected.

Final Words

There’s no doubt Tesla has built a name that carries weight, and the Model Y does live up to most expectations. It’s smart and simple. The pricing may be on the higher side, but it isn’t just about buying a car - it’s about entering a different way of driving.

With its entry into India, the Model Y may well be the vehicle that starts shifting more Indian buyers toward electric. And for those who want to get ahead of that curve, this might just be the right place to start.
