BMW iX1 Range

The iX1's 66.4 kWh battery powers the EV. It features an all-wheel-drive dual-motor system that produces 308.43 bhp and 494 Nm of torque. It offers a WLTP-claimed range of up to 440 km. Recharging from empty to full takes 6.3 hours with an 11 kW wall box AC charger. Here’s what you need to know about the BMW iX1 range: 

• Battery Capacity: An electric vehicle's (EV) range is closely tied to its battery capacity. A higher battery density provides more power per kilogram, extending the vehicle's range. Additionally, the battery's state of health (SoH) affects range; over time, EV batteries typically lose about 2% of their capacity annually, reducing the range.

• Wind and Payload: Electric motors use more energy when dealing with headwinds or carrying heavy loads, which can decrease range. Strong winds create additional resistance, while a heavier payload increases the vehicle's weight, lowering efficiency and range.

• Road Conditions: The condition of the roads can significantly affect an EV's range. Uphill sections require more effort from the vehicle, reducing the range, while poor-quality roads with low traction or wet conditions can also decrease efficiency. Conversely, driving downhill can enhance range by reducing the motor's workload and using regenerative braking to return power to the battery. In general, dry, smooth, and flat roads are more beneficial for range than wet, rough, or hilly terrain.

• Driving Style and Speed: Like traditional vehicles, driving style impacts an EV's efficiency and range. Abrupt acceleration, frequent stops, and high speeds increase the load on the electric motors, causing higher energy consumption and reduced range. Smooth, steady driving with gentle acceleration and speeds below 100 km/h typically provides the best range.

• Tyre Health: The state of your tyres significantly affects range. Properly inflated tyres with good traction ensure efficient power transfer from the motor to the road. Worn or under-inflated tyres can lead to energy loss through wheelspin and increased resistance, making the motor work harder and reducing range. Regularly checking tyre condition and pressure helps maximise your EV's efficiency.
