About Jaguar I-Pace

The long-awaited debut of the Jaguar I-Pace electric SUV has finally occurred in India, marking the brand's inaugural venture into an all-electric model. Beginning at Rs 1.26 crore (ex-showroom price in Delhi) for the I-Pace HSE variant, this release signifies a significant shift for the automaker, aligning with its recent commitment to achieving an all-electric lineup by 2025.

Positioned as the second luxury electric SUV in the market, the I-Pace is set to compete with rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz EQC and the forthcoming Tesla Model X. Currently, the Jaguar I-Pace is available in a singular variant in India. Powered by two electric motors, one on each axle, the vehicle boasts a combined output of 400 bhp and 696 Nm, drawing energy from a 90 kWh battery pack. According to WLTP standards, it offers an impressive 470 km range, with real-world estimates ranging between 300-400 km on a single charge.

Efficiency enhancements such as an Eco mode and brake regeneration extend the range, while its sleek design boasts a drag coefficient of 0.29 cd, ensuring aerodynamic optimisation. Charging capabilities include an 11 kW three-phase onboard charger and compatibility with up to 100 kW DC charge rate at fast-charging stations, which are currently being established at Jaguar dealerships and service centres across India.

Highlighted features of the I-Pace include Matrix LED headlamps, signature LED tail lights, standard 19-inch alloy wheels, and a stylish blacked-out glass roof. Without a conventional engine, the front bonnet accommodates a frunk for storing the onboard charger.

Inside, the cabin combines premium luxury with sporty elements, featuring a digital instrument console, Pivi Pro touchscreen infotainment system with OTA updates, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a secondary screen for climate control. Additional amenities include wireless charging and various leather upholstery options for the five-seater configuration. The spacious boot offers a capacity of 656 litres (wet), expandable to 1453 litres, with rear seats folded.

Safety and convenience are enhanced with features like active suspension with adaptive dynamics, air suspension raising ground clearance to 174 mm, 3D surround cameras, adaptive cruise control, ABS with EBD, and the Deployable Pedestrian safety system with an External Sound System (ESS) to alert pedestrians at speeds below 20 kmph.

Jaguar I-Pace Models and Price

In this section, you will find comprehensive details regarding the pricing of variant-based models of the Jaguar I-Pace.

  • Jaguar I-Pace Electric Variant Price: The Jaguar I-Pace comes in one variant in India known as the I-Pace HSE. The ex-showroom price (Delhi) of this variant is Rs 1.26 crore. It has a battery capacity of 90 kWh, offering a range of 470 km and a maximum output of 394.26 bhp.

Jaguar I-Pace: Quick Review

In the following section, we will delve into the dimensions of the Jaguar I-Pace, encompassing its interior and exterior design aesthetics, performance capabilities, advanced technological features, comprehensive safety equipment, and other notable attributes.

Exterior Design

The initial impression of the I-Pace's design is undeniably positive, showcasing all the distinctive design cues typical of a Jaguar and appearing instantly recognisable when viewed head-on. However, the sleek profile with sharp creases and a sloping roofline is a favourite aspect. The 19-inch alloy wheels also perfectly complement the arches, enhancing its sporty stance. At the rear, the sharply styled LED tail lamps and wide haunches contribute to a formidable appearance.

Interestingly, the Jaguar I-Pace draws aesthetic inspiration from the C-X75 concept. While it may seem unlikely for an electric family car to share similarities with a turbine-powered hybrid hypercar, both feature cab-forward proportions, broad snouts, and low, vented bonnets.

The rear design of the I-Pace diverges from the conventional, with its tall and squared-off shape optimising aerodynamics to achieve a commendably low drag coefficient of 0.29. Despite being Jaguar design director Ian Callum's least favourite element, it adds a robust and distinctly appealing visual character to the car.

Leveraging its electric architecture, the I-Pace cleverly utilises its space. Despite being only a centimetre longer than the Jaguar XE, it boasts a wheelbase surpassing that of the Jaguar XF. While presenting as an SUV, it sits notably low to the ground compared to typical SUVs and boasts a supercar-like width of 2139 mm, including mirrors.

Even after five years, the I-Pace maintains its unique and unmistakable appearance, leading Jaguar to avoid significant facelifts. Instead, it received technical updates in 2020, with the front grille transitioning into a solid panel by 2023.

Powering the I-Pace are lightweight permanent-magnet electric motors on each axle, each coupled with a single-speed epicyclic transmission and an open differential. Brake-based torque vectoring is employed in place of a locking differential to ensure maximum compactness.

Interior and Features

The interior of the I-Pace is on par with its striking exterior, boasting a meticulously crafted layout. Unlike the e-tron and EQC, which share many interior components with their internal combustion engine counterparts, every element inside the I-Pace feels bespoke and exceptional. From the sleek pop-out door handles to the multi-layered dashboard and the luxuriously bolstered seats, every detail exudes a sense of uniqueness and quality.

Upon its debut, the I-Pace became the first Jaguar to integrate the intuitive Touch Pro Duo infotainment system. This system combines touchscreens, capacitive sensors, and tactile physical controls to manage essential functions seamlessly. The cabin features two touchscreens: one dedicated to the infotainment system and vehicle settings, while the other handles climate control and seat adjustments. While the technology lends a futuristic ambience to the cabin, its usability is somewhat compromised. Simple tasks like adjusting the blower speed require navigating through multiple steps, utilising both the secondary touch display and the physical rotary knob.

Despite being marketed as a mid-size crossover, the I-Pace's cab-forward design and electric vehicle packaging result in a surprisingly spacious interior, especially in the rear. Ample shoulder room, generous headroom, and sufficient leg space characterise the cabin's comfort. The full-size panoramic roof spans the entire seating area, flooding the cabin with natural light and enhancing the feeling of openness. Jaguar incorporates advanced technology into the glass roof and windows, allowing them to absorb infrared light eliminating the need for blinds.

The top-spec HSE trim offers a plethora of premium features, including Matrix LED headlights, electrically adjustable seats with cooling function, a heads-up display, a premium Meridian sound system, an electric tailgate, a full panoramic fixed glass roof, a fully digital instrument cluster, and dual touch displays for vehicle functions. However, it's worth noting that the air suspension, which performs excellently across various road surfaces, is only available as an optional extra, even on the HSE trim.

Battery and Transmission

Jaguar I-Pace Battery Capacity

Powering the I-Pace are dual electric motors generating 399 bhp of power and 696 Nm of torque. These motors drive all four wheels, enabling the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. Utilising a 90 kWh battery pack, the electric motors can cover 470 km on a single charge according to the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) cycle.

The battery pack facilitates rapid charging, reaching 80 per cent capacity from 0 in a mere 45 minutes. Jaguar's collaboration with Tata Power ensures convenient charging options, with access to over 200 charging stations across 23 cities. Additionally, Tata Power will supply the I-Pace with a 7.4 kWh home charger.

Jaguar I-Pace Transmission

The Jaguar I-Pace has two electric motors that drive all four wheels using a single-speed epicyclic gearbox and an open differential. Brake-based torque vectoring improves handling and stability. This configuration offers smooth and responsive power delivery, allowing the I-Pace to accelerate rapidly and efficiently handle various driving situations.

Jaguar I-Pace Performance

The Jaguar has a sporty vibe, as you'd expect from a brand with this pedigree. That implies that while driving around towns or cities at lesser speeds, the suspension does not handle as effectively as it should when encountering road bumps. Things improve as you raise your speed; however, this is not recommended on the main street!

However, air suspension is offered as an option, which improves comfort. While comfort improves as speed increases, drivers will notice greater tyre noise when travelling up and down highways. However, the automobile feels smooth and confident while driving due to its comfortable ride and strong acceleration.

Jaguar symbolises sportiness, but dealing with a vehicle weighing more than two tonnes may be challenging. However, when cornering, things remain relatively stable; there is little roll, and you never feel like the I-Pace is out of control.

Jaguar I-Pace Range

The Jaguar I-Pace is an all-electric luxury SUV with an EPA-estimated range of up to 470 km on one charge. The I-Pace's 90kWh lithium-ion battery and two electric motors deliver quick torque and high acceleration, propelling it from 0 to 100 mph in 4.8 seconds. With its elegant look, outstanding range, and thrilling performance, the I-Pace provides a captivating blend of luxury, sustainability, and driving enjoyment.

Jaguar I-Pace Ground Clearance

The Jaguar I-Pace boasts an impressive ground clearance of 174 mm, which is relatively high for a luxury electric SUV. This generous clearance provides a commanding driving position and enhances the vehicle's capability to tackle mild off-road terrain or navigate over speed bumps and curbs confidently. The elevated ride height contributes to the I-Pace's versatility and ensures a comfortable driving experience on various road surfaces.

Jaguar I-Pace Boot Space

The trunk is impressively spacious, slightly surpassing the capacity of Jaguar's F-Pace SUV. Despite housing the batteries in the floor, which elevates the boot level, it offers approximately 656 litres of storage space. However, when removed, the lightweight parcel shelf lacks storage space, posing an inconvenience. Folding down the rear seats creates a substantial open space with no boot lip, facilitating easy loading and unloading as items can slide to the rear effortlessly.

Jaguar I-Pace Dimensions

The Jaguar I-Pace's overall length is 4682 mm, width is 2139 mm, and height is 1566 mm. Its extensive 2990 mm wheelbase allows for a big interior and plenty of luggage capacity. With its sleek yet substantial dimensions, the I-Pace balances aerodynamic efficiency and interior space, providing a pleasant and functional electric car package.

Jaguar I-Pace Colours

The Jaguar I-Pace is available in 6 colour options:

  • Fuji White

  • Firenze Red Metallic

  • Portofino Blue Metallic

  • Eiger Grey Metallic

  • Santorini Black Metallic

  • Ostuni Pearl White

Safety

In 2018, the Jaguar I-Pace underwent Euro NCAP testing and earned a top rating of five stars. It particularly excelled in adult occupant safety, achieving a score of 91%, while child occupant safety was slightly lower at 81%. Safety assistance and protection for vulnerable road users were rated 81% and 73%, respectively.

The Jaguar incorporates a range of safety features that contribute to its maximum score. These include an active bonnet, autonomous emergency tracking for pedestrians and cyclists, speed assistance and lane departure warning systems. Additional onboard technologies comprise traffic sign recognition and a rear traffic monitor, with keyless entry being another sought-after feature.

Jaguar I-Pace Rivals

The facelifted I-Pace goes up against some of the popular cars in its segment, like the BMW iX, BMW i5, Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, Audi Q8 e-tron etc.

Jaguar I-Pace: Old vs Facelift

The Jaguar I-Pace in India has undergone a facelift, with the updated model launched in mid-2021. Here's a breakdown of the key differences between the pre-facelift (2018-2021) and facelift models:

Exterior

The facelift model has moderate design changes for a more refreshed appearance, including a new front grille with a redesigned pattern and an upgraded front bumper for better aerodynamics. It also has external improvements, such as alternative wheel styles and the Black Pack cosmetic package. The previous model had the original front grille design, a basic front bumper, and fewer external customisation possibilities.

Interior

The infotainment system in the facelift model has been significantly upgraded, with the new Pivi Pro interface on a bigger 11.4-inch touchscreen, providing superior visuals and user experience. It also offers improved materials for a more premium feel while maintaining a large, comfortable interior design. The previous model had the Touch Pro infotainment system, a smaller 10-inch touchscreen, and standard materials that may seem less luxurious than the facelift.

Features

The Pivi Pro system in the facelift model adds wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connection and extra advanced driver-assistance features (ADAS), which are possible above the previous model. The previous model included wired smartphone connectivity and standard ADAS capabilities, which may vary based on the model year.

Battery Capacity and Gearbox

Both the facelift and pre-facelift models likely retain the same electric powertrain options in India, offering a driving range of around 400 km (WLTP). Both are equipped with a 90 kWh battery capacity and automatic transmission.
