The AMG G 63 retains its twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8, boasting 577 bhp and benefits from a mild-hybrid technology.
Mercedes-Benz has revealed the new generation G-Class, scheduled for a market debut in the U.S. later this year. While maintaining its iconic presence, the 2025 models introduce enhancements that promise improved performance, efficiency, and off-road capability. In a notable shift, the G 550 sees a transition from a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V-8 to a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-6 engine, delivering 443 bhp—27 bhp more than its predecessor. Meanwhile, the G 63 retains its twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8, boasting 577 bhp and now benefiting from the same mild-hybrid technology for enhanced efficiency without compromising performance.
Performance enthusiasts will appreciate the G 63's optional AMG Active Ride Control suspension, featuring hydraulic roll stabilization and adaptive dampers. This enhancement not only elevates on-road performance but also enhances off-road capabilities, providing improved wheel articulation. The inclusion of two additional off-road driving modes further underscores the G-Class's prowess in tackling challenging terrains.
Inside the cabin, subtle updates enhance the overall experience. While the dashboard layout remains familiar, new details such as illuminated air vent controls and a redesigned steering wheel with capacitive touch controls elevate the interior ambience. The integration of a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and infotainment screen ensures seamless connectivity and intuitive control, augmented by the introduction of the Offroad Cockpit. This innovative feature provides essential off-road information, including vehicle positioning, altitude, and differential lock status, enhancing the driver's situational awareness during off-road excursions.
Externally, the 2025 models receive subtle aerodynamic refinements, including a new grille design, revised front and rear fascias, and a roof-edge spoiler. These enhancements not only improve aerodynamic efficiency but also contribute to reduced noise levels, complemented by new cladding on the A-pillars and additional insulation materials.
Looking ahead, Mercedes-Benz has signalled its commitment to electrification with the forthcoming electric G-Class, previewed by the EQG concept. Set to debut alongside its gas-powered counterparts, the electric variant promises to match the off-road capabilities of its predecessors while offering emissions-free driving. Additionally, plans for a smaller electric G-Class later in the decade reaffirm Mercedes-Benz's dedication to sustainable mobility without compromising the G-Class's renowned performance and heritage.
