Affordable SUVs are in high demand in India, as the market shifts away from hatchbacks and sedans even while buyers remain sensitive to costs. SUVs are aspirational and practical for most types of buyers, whether you only need a car for city commutes or frequently head out of town for a weekend. An entry-level SUV can’t have too many compromises in terms of space, comfort or ride quality, and today’s buyers want plenty of features and all the latest tech.

Our 2026 Subcompact SUV category had three nominees: the Hyundai Venue, Kia Syros, and Skoda Kylaq. While each one had its own appeal, the recently launched Hyundai Venue was our jury’s choice. It screams modern with its design language – all muscular angles, bulky proportions, and slick LEDs. On the inside, the finishes and equipment are all thoroughly modern and make you feel like you’re in a substantially more expensive car. The digital cluster can be personalised, and everything is legible and within reach of the driver. 

Rear legroom has improved quite a bit compared to the previous model. As for the driving experience, suspension and handling are great, and you finally get a diesel option with a torque converter automatic. If you want something sportier, there’s also an N-Line version which is far more engaging to drive. You get L2 ADAS features for safety, plus six airbags, ESC, and more.
