The windshield display system would rely on various sensors, cameras, and scanning devices.
Apple has filed a patent application describing an Augmented Reality (AR) system that would project a graphical overlay onto a vehicle's windshield to provide drivers with enhanced environmental information.
The windshield display system would rely on various sensors, cameras, and scanning devices to build a 3D model of the vehicle's surroundings. The system would then integrate this model into a full-scale projection onto the windshield glass, essentially blending virtual elements with the real-world view.
According to the patent application, the AR display could provide real-time telemetry about objects, humans, speed, suspension and other factors to drivers. Apple states the system may utilize technology being developed for its upcoming AR Vision headsets.
Interestingly, the patent also mentions a FaceTime application that could enable visual communication between occupants in the same or different vehicles.
While AR in vehicles is not a new concept, Apple aims to push the technology further than current head-up displays (HUDs) from automakers like Mercedes-Benz and BMW. The company showed a version of CarPlay last year with virtual gauges and widgets, demonstrating the possibilities of in-car display systems.
While concrete plans for an Apple Car remain unconfirmed, the patent provides a glimpse into Apple's ambitions of combining AR with mobility. However, as with other Apple patents, there is no guarantee if and when the AR windshield will become a reality.
