India's passenger electric vehicle market is witnessing a marked shift, with Mahindra emerging as a close second to leader Tata Motors which continues to hold an advantage. According to Vahan registration data for the April-June quarter of FY27, Tata Motors retained the lead position with 32,283 electric vehicle registrations, more than doubling last year's tally of 15,794 units. Homegrown Mahindra followed with 20,112 registrations, compared with 10,144 units in the corresponding quarter a year earlier, which is a growth of nearly 98 per cent.
The data also points to another trend. Tata Motors' overall passenger vehicle growth during the quarter was driven largely by its internal combustion engine (ICE) portfolio rather than electric vehicles alone.
The automaker added nearly 49,300 passenger vehicle registrations compared with the same period last year, of which around 16,500 came from electric vehicles. The remaining growth was driven by its petrol, diesel and CNG-powered models, highlighting the continued strength of its conventional vehicle business alongside its leadership in EVs.
MG Motor India retained the third position with 16,502 electric vehicle registrations during the quarter. However, its year-on-year growth of around 22 per cent was well below that recorded by Tata Motors and Mahindra.
India's biggest carmaker Maruti Suzuki, which had little presence in the passenger EV segment a year ago, made an immediate impact following the launch of its first electric model. It registered 4,894 electric vehicles during the quarter, with monthly registrations rising from 1,335 units in April to 1,896 units in June, indicating improving production and deliveries.
New entrant in the India market VinFast recorded 3,973 registrations during the period, while BYD registered 2,173 units, adding further competition to the market.
Hyundai was the only major passenger vehicle manufacturer to witness a decline in electric vehicle registrations as they fell 35 per cent year-on-year to 1,386 units from 2,142 units in the same quarter last year, with monthly registrations declining throughout the quarter.
The broader passenger vehicle market also remained firmly led by Maruti Suzuki, which recorded 498,632 registrations during the quarter. Tata Motors followed with 174,299 units, ahead of Mahindra at 165,402 units, Hyundai at 140,552 units, Toyota at 84,474 units and Kia at 75,122 units.
