Next year’s iPhone 17 models could be the first devices to be powered by chipsets made on TSMC’s 2nm node.
While we are a while away from the launch of the iPhone 16 models, there are rumours already about the iPhone 17. A report out of Taiwan claims that next year’s iPhone 17 models will be the first devices to be powered by chipsets made on TSMC’s 2nm node. This will likely be the A19 Pro processor.
Apple will likely launch the A18 Pro and A18 chipsets this year when it launches the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro phones in September. This chip will likely be on a 3nm node. Apple became the first TSMC customer to get chipsets fabricated on the 3nm node in 2023 with the A17 Pro and the M3 line of chipsets. In 2024, it will get chipsets which are on an updated 3nm process, which will also boost performance.
TSMC’s 2nm chipsets will also be used for the next generation M4 processors. The step after 2nm is 2nm enhanced, and then 1.4nm.
With the iPhone 16, huge generative AI updates are expected. These updates could include an overhaul of the iOS 18 user interface and also on-device AI processing capabilities on the iPhone. Apple is also mulling licensing foundational models from Google and OpenAI.
