Today's "Scary Fast" event is testament that Apple is living up to its promise of updating its Macs at a break length pace.

For years, Apple was lethargic in updating its Mac products. It was dependent on the Intel's product development cycle for performance updates. It was also tied to AMD for discrete GPUs. But when it went all-in on Apple Silicon and revealed the M-series of system on chips for the Mac in December 2020, it promised that it will ramp updates for the Mac line of products and the pace has been frenetic.

Today's "Scary Fast" event is testament that Apple is living up to its promise of updating its Macs at a break length pace. Within 10 months, the MacBook Pro has gone from the M2 Pro and M2 Max to M3 Pro and M3 Max system on chips. But it may be taking things too far as the Mac has always been an expensive product to purchase and people who have bought the M2 models will feel hard done by these new updates.

I am one of those who just purchased a decked up 64GB M2 Max 14-inch MacBook Pro in August. That was two months ago. I spent more than Rs 3 lakhs for this configuration. It was a custom build to order MacBook Pro and I thought this would be the top tier MacBook Pro for at least a years and within 2 months Apple has made it obsolete. These new Macs have hardware enabled ray tracing and has started touting the gaming credentials of its platforms -- so while no-one buys a Mac to play games, if you are getting a top tier SKU you are certainly thinking about all possibilities.

While the M2 Max has an immense GPU, it doesn't have ray tracing so if Apple is able to mobilise game developers for its platform, the M2 Max users that I am is left in the lurch. In fact, if one looks at it the M3 models are a bigger leap than the M2 models of the MacBook Pro because now the battery life has improved too and the brightness levels of the screen have been boosted in SDR. There is even a snazzy new colour called Space Black which is a telltale sign that you have the latest and greatest product -- which again is not there for the M2 models.

Those who just bought the M2 13-inch MacBook Pro should feel even more aggrieved. Not only they can now get a fresher MacBook Pro design with a larger, and vastly superior 14-inch mini LED screen, better speakers, longer battery life and a better keyboard -- with more flexibility with IO, they get the M3 chip which is significant step up graphically with support for ray tracing.
