How Apple Aims to Make the Vision Headset More Affordable
Ever since the Apple Vision Pro was unveiled during the WWDC 2023 on June 5, discussions are rife about the Cupertino giant's foray into the world of extended reality (XR). Packed with high-end technology such as the M2 and R1 silicon chips, two 4K displays and spatial audio, the Vision Pro costs a fortune.
As per a Bloomberg report by Mark Gurman, Apple is working on an affordable version of the Vision Pro that could launch by the end of 2025. Though, it doesn't come as a surprise to those familiar with Apple's product nomenclature.
Apple Vision could likely be the name of the affordable version of the Vision Pro headset that will make it more accessible to a wider audience.
On stage, Apple compared its Vision Pro headset to a "state of the art TV, surround sound system, powerful computer with multiple high-definition displays, high-end camera and more".
However, the Vision Pro is designed for individual use and the experience isn't shareable as with TVs.
Gurman says that Apple initially considered delaying the pricing announcement to avoid negative feedback but went ahead with it during the WWDC 2023 keynote presentation.
Gurman suggests that Apple could use lower-quality screens, less powerful chips, fewer cameras, a simpler headband design, and eliminate certain features like the 3D camera for its affordable version.
However, core features such as the EyeSight screen and eye/hand tracking system are expected to be retained on the standard Vision headset.
Apple plans to release the cheaper model by the end of 2025, approximately two years after the original Vision Pro.
Gurman also says that Apple is already working on the second generation of the Vision Pro with increased performance chops.
