Apple’s renowned manufacturing partner, Foxconn, has secured an additional $1 billion to bolster its factory and manufacturing capabilities in India, a country that is becoming increasingly vital for iPhone production. This move signifies a major shift in the global supply chain, with a notable transition from China, potentially making India a primary market for both Foxconn and Apple outside of China.
This development follows the Karnataka government's confirmation of a $1.67 billion investment in Foxconn, bringing the total investment in Foxconn's Indian operations to $2.67 billion. Foxconn, responsible for manufacturing 70% of iPhones and the world's largest contract manufacturer, also played a pivotal role in establishing Xiaomi's presence in India, contributing to its status as India’s top smartphone maker from 2019 to 2021.
In Karnataka, the government announced plans in August for a $600 million investment focused on producing iPhone casing components and specialised chip-making equipment. iPhones are expected to be manufactured in the state from April 2024, creating approximately 50,000 job opportunities.
Besides Foxconn, Tata is set to manufacture iPhones at its facility in Karnataka, acquired from Wistron. Apple has also encouraged Japanese firm TDK to begin manufacturing batteries for the iPhone 16 in India.
The iPhone 16 marks a significant shift, being the first iPhone model to start its manufacturing development in India rather than China. In a groundbreaking move in 2023, Apple launched the iPhone 15 series simultaneously in India, the US, and China. Apple aims to manufacture around 25% of all iPhones in India within the next 3-4 years, a substantial increase from the current 7% of iPhones made in the country.
