The factory shut down was a part of the brand’s operational strategy to align its supply chain and conduct scheduled maintenance.

India’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer Hero MotoCorp reported that it sold 3,05,406 bikes and scooters last month. This was almost 43 per cent less than the 5,33,585 units it retailed in the same period last year. According to Hero, the sales drop was primarily due to the fact that Hero had to temporarily halt production from April 17-19 at its Dharuhera, Gurugram, Haridwar, and Neemrana manufacturing plants to facilitate scheduled maintenance and align its supply chain.

However, when we compare it to March 2025 sales, wherein it retailed 5,49,604 units, the drop in sales is even more alarming. Especially when one considers the 3 day production shutdown shouldn’t have affected the overall sales. It will be interesting to see the May, 2025 sales performance to actually gauge the impact of the shutdown in sales or if there’s more to this story.

With fewer two-wheelers manufactured, Hero MotoCorp’s domestic sales performance thereby dropped by 43.79 per cent – from 5,13,296 in April 2024 to 2,88,524 units last month. Its export business also declined by 16.79 per cent, with just 16,882 units exported compared to 20,289 units it did in the same period, year. Segment-wise, Hero MotoCorp’s sold 42.38 per cent less motorcycles, while scooter sales dropped by 47.85 per cent, when compared to sales of April 2024. It will be interesting to see the May, 2025 sales performance to actually gauge the impact of the shutdown in sales or if there’s more to this story.

Vida V2 Prices Slashed.jpg
Hero recently slashed the price of the Vida V2 to make it more affordable.

On the contrary, Hero MotoCorp sold 7,116 units of the Vida V2 electric scooter last month, whereas on the Vahan portal, it recorded registrations of 6,123 units. This might represent a steady growth for the company on a standalone basis, but it is still lagging in the nation's electric two-wheeler race and is trailing behind the likes of Bajaj, TVS, and Ola – all three of which are now averaging 20,000+ sales on a monthly basis. It also trails behind the company it has invested in, Ather Energy, which recently went live with its IPO. In fact, Ather Energy holds 14 per cent of the electric scooter market share, while Hero MotoCorp holds just 7 per cent market share.

However, in the foreseeable future, we expect Hero MotoCorp will bounce back strongly. The brand kickstarted 2025 with the launch of several new exciting products. From the new Hero XPulse 210 to the Xoom 160, and the Xtreme 250R. In fact, the brand’s latest quarter-litre naked sport bike has become quite the strong contender in its segment, and that should help the marque rake in more sales. Hero MotoCorp even expanded its product portfolio in the Sri Lankan market by launching the Xoom 110, Hunk 160R 4V, Xtreme 125R, and HF Deluxe. It's a combination of all of these factors that makes us believe that Hero MotoCopr will continue to occupy the larger share of the Indian two-wheeler sales pie in the country.
