Should the alarm bells start ringing for Hero MotoCorp or is it a small bip in the road?
2025 didn’t start on a positive note for Hero MotoCorp as the largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the country fell behind Honda in April sales. While this isn’t the first occasion when Honda managed to pip its erstwhile partner, what’s more alarming is that even Bajaj Auto and TVS managed to outsell Hero MotoCorp for the first time ever in over two decades.
The Indian-arm of the Japanese bikemaker has bested the Indian marque by selling 1,75,490 more two-wheelers than Hero MotoCorp. Even TVS Motor Company surpassed Hero by cumulatively retailing 1,24,924 units more than what Hero cumulatively retailed. Bajaj Auto might have been quite far behind TVS in that regard, and despite registering a 6 per cent decline in cumulative sales last month – it still managed to oust Hero MotoCorp by selling 60,404 units last month.
Hero claims that the drop in sales was due to the fact that it had to shut operations at its four plants for maintenance and streamlining production. The gap in sales figure is too high for the above to be the only reason for the massive drop in sales. Hero has been losing traction over the years and it managed to outsell Honda by a margin of just 68,000 units in FY25. The main reason has been the slowdown in the commuter motorcycle sales which is its bread and butter segment. The other segment where Hero MotoCorp hasn’t been able to capitalise is the booming scooter segment as it has been outclassed by Honda, TVS, Suzuki and Yamaha.
Despite the poor sales outing, there is a glimmer of hope for the brand as it has introduced a bunch of new products such as the Hero Xoom 125, XPulse 210 and the Xtreme 250R. The company will be banking on these new range of products to revive sales and help it reclaim its crown. Whether or not it happens is something we shall find out with the upcoming May sales report.
