The automotive sector witnessed contrasting fortunes in August 2025, with car manufacturers recording month-on-month decline and sales growth. This comes at a time when the auto industry grapples with GST rate adjustments and evolving market dynamics.
Tata Motors saw a marginal 3 per cent year-over-year decline in passenger vehicle sales, with 43,315 units in August 2025 versus 44,486 units in the previous year's corresponding month. Domestic sales totalled 41,001 units, positioning the homegrown auto manufacturer ahead of competitor Mahindra's 39,399 domestic units.

The automaker achieved a significant milestone in electric mobility, recording its strongest-ever EV sales month with 8,540 units sold across domestic and international markets, representing a 44 per cent year-over-year improvement. Sequential performance showed recovery from July 2025's 40,175 total passenger vehicle sales, which included 39,521 domestic units.
Hyundai Motor India Limited reported total sales of 60,501 units in August 2025, comprising 44,001 domestic units and 16,500 export units.
Toyota India saw robust performance, with an impressive 11 per cent year-over-year increase in total vehicle sales for August 2025. The Japanese automaker moved 34,236 units during the month, surpassing the 30,879 units recorded in the corresponding period of 2024.
Domestic market sales reached 29,302 units, while international shipments contributed 4,934 units to the overall tally. The company also showed sequential improvement from July 2025, when combined sales totaled 32,575 units, comprising 29,159 domestic sales and 3,416 export units.
JSW MG Motor celebrated its strongest monthly performance on record, registering 6,578 unit sales in August 2025. This figure represents a substantial 52 per cent surge compared to August 2024's 4,323 units, though slightly trailing July 2025's 6,678 units.
The company highlighted particular strength in its electric vehicle portfolio, with the Windsor EV achieving a 5 per cent month-over-month improvement and recording its highest-ever monthly sales figures. The compact Comet EV similarly demonstrated growing market acceptance, posting a 21 per cent sequential increase, though specific unit figures for individual models remained undisclosed.
Mahindra reported a 9 per cent decline in domestic passenger vehicle sales, with 39,399 units sold in the Indian market during August 2025. This represented a notable month-over-month decrease from July 2025's 49,871 domestic units. Total passenger vehicle sales, including exports, reached 40,846 units for the month.
The company attributed the reduction to deliberate inventory management strategies ahead of anticipated GST policy changes.
"With the final GST announcement approaching, we consciously decided to bring down the wholesale billing to minimise the stock being carried by our dealers. We look forward to the GST rationalisation, which would be a demand driver through the festive season," Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO, Automotive Division, M&M Ltd, was quoted as saying.
