Hydrogen power EV would make electric mobility as practical as petrol powered counterparts.
Bajaj officials have confirmed the launch of the CNG-powered motorcycle soon but the brand isn’t done yet. Bajaj is setting its sights on the future with an exploration of hydrogen-powered vehicles under its subsidiary. Chetak Technologies Limited (CTL).
While the launch of Bajaj's CNG bike is imminent, the company is taking a long-term approach with hydrogen technology. This project is in its early stages, but a successful implementation could make Bajaj the first Indian manufacturer to bring a hydrogen-powered two-wheeler to our market.
This strategic move by CTL broadens Bajaj Auto's portfolio with a technologically advanced option. Notably, Bajaj has already demonstrated a willingness to explore alternative fuel sources beyond traditional petrol, as evidenced by their upcoming CNG offering.
The road to hydrogen-powered two-wheelers won't be smooth sailing. Several hurdles need to be overcome, including storage, safety, infrastructure, and efficiency. Storing hydrogen, a volatile gas, necessitates pressurised cylinders, raising safety concerns. The fuel's flammability and potential to cause electrical shock and serious harm, require careful handling throughout the process. Additionally, the limited availability of hydrogen refuelling stations and the need for specialised production and transportation infrastructure pose significant logistical challenges. Finally, current hydrogen-powered options are not yet as efficient as electric vehicles.
Despite these challenges, hydrogen-powered two-wheelers offer a compelling package of advantages. First and foremost, they produce zero emissions, with hydrogen fuel cells emitting only water vapour. This eliminates harmful pollutants and greenhouse gases, making them a clean and sustainable transportation option. Furthermore, hydrogen refuelling is remarkably fast when compared to recharging an electric vehicle. It is as quick as filling a petrol tank. In a significant advantage over electric vehicles, hydrogen-powered two-wheelers benefit from the lightweight nature of hydrogen which replaces the heavy batteries. This superior energy density translates to lighter vehicles, enabling extended range on a single refill. Durability is another benefit, with fuel cells boasting a lifespan two to three times longer than batteries. Hydrogen itself is a virtually limitless resource, readily available unlike fossil fuels or even lithium ion cells, both of which need to be imported into our country thereby affecting Forex reserves.
The Bajaj Hydrogen motorcycle is still in its early days of development but if the brand is able to crack this code, it has a winner not only for the Indian market but it can be a major success story in global markets as well.
