We take a closer look at the top five fuel-efficient cars that made a remarkable impact on Indian roads in 2023.
In a year marked by innovations and advancements in the automotive sector, the Indian car industry has witnessed the launch of several fuel-efficient models, setting a new standard for eco-friendly driving. As we bid farewell to 2023, it's time to take a closer look at the top five fuel-efficient cars that made a remarkable impact on Indian roads.
The Invicto is the rebadged version of the Toyota Innova HyCross and like its sibling, is underpinned by a similar strong hybrid set-up so this allows Maruti’s flagship and most expensive offering to return a claimed fuel efficiency of 23 kmpl. With a 52-litre fuel tank, the Invicto can easily travel over 1100 km on a single tank of petrol.
The Verna was Hyundai’s one of the biggest launches for 2023, and brought in a generation change coupled with a long list of arsenal at its disposal right from a new design language, to new features as well as Level 2 ADAS. Having said that, the return on fuel from the Verna is also pretty decent because there’s one turbo and one NA petrol engine on offer. So the claimed average return on fuel ranges between 18.60 kmpl to 20.6 kmpl for the manual and automatic versions.
Kia recently updated its compact SUV, the Seltos with a mid-cycle facelift however, the changes done on the new SUV are almost generational enhancements. Along with a new 1.5-litre turbo petrol unit, the 2023 Seltos also brings in cosmetic and visual enhancements along with tons of safety improvements such as ADAS. As far as fuel efficiency goes, Kia claims that the Seltos returns 17 kmpl for the petrol NA manual, while the CVT returns 17.7 kmpl.
The turbo petrol, on the other hand, returned 17.7 kmpl for the iMT while the 7-speed DCT versions returned 17.9 kmpl. Then there’s also the diesel versions on offer, which return 20.7 kmpl for the iMT and 19.1 kmpl for the automatics.
The latest small SUV from the Hyundai stable is also the most popular car of 2023. Considering the small footprint of the car, the claimed fuel return on the manual version is 19.40 kmpl while the AMT gives a return of 19.20 kmpl. There’s also a CNG version of the Exter with a 27.10 kmpkg return.
The Honda Elevate SUV is available with two engine/transmission combinations. The ex-showroom prices of the 2023 Elevate start from ₹11.00 lakh for the SV variant with the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and 6-speed MT. The range tops out at ₹16.00 lakh (ex-showroom) with the ZX variant, which gets a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with CVT. As far as fuel efficiency goes, the company claims a return of 16.92 kmpl for the manual and 15.31 kmpl for the CVT.
This past year has been a ground-breaking year for the Indian car industry, with manufacturers prioritizing fuel efficiency and sustainability. These cars not only cater to the practical needs of consumers but also reflect a broader industry trend towards a greener and more eco-conscious future.
