Tackling the lack of standardised charging stations with plans for over 5,000 by next year.
Leading companies in the EV charging sector have joined forces to create the Bharat Charge Alliance (BCA). This initiative tackles a critical barrier to EV adoption: the lack of a standardised charging infrastructure.
Currently, EV owners face a frustrating situation similar to needing a different charger for every phone brand. Different manufacturers use various charging systems, making it difficult to find compatible stations. The BCA aims to solve this by promoting interoperability.
The Alliance is set to ensure that EV owners can seamlessly charge their vehicles across a network of stations, regardless of the vehicle's make or model. This claims to improve user experience and reduce "range anxiety significantly," the fear of running out of power before finding a station.
The Alliance comprises major players like Log9 (battery technology), Trinity Cleantech (sustainable energy), Tork Motors (electric bikes), and several charging network providers. It's goal is to establish over 5,000 public charging stations across India by the next fiscal year (FY26).
The BCA is also advocating for a specific charging standard, the Type 6 (IS 17017-2-6) DC fast charger. This aligns with India's sustainability goals and is gaining traction among electric three-wheeler manufacturers. Importantly, the government has endorsed the BCA's collaboration and the chosen standards.
With a standardised charging system and a rapidly expanding network of stations, the BCA hopes to make EVs a more convenient and attractive option for Indian consumers. This will ultimately contribute to a cleaner future by encouraging a shift towards electric mobility.
