BMW X3

BMW last held the number one position in India in 2012, when it sold around 9,375 cars, with Audi in second place and Mercedes-Benz third.

BMW has pipped Mercedes-Benz to claim the top spot in India's luxury car market for the first time in nearly 13 years, edging ahead of its German rival in the final quarter of the last fiscal year, although Mercedes-Benz held on to its overall lead for the full year. According to data from the Vahan dashboard, BMW Group shifted 4,944 luxury vehicles, including cars and SUVs, in the January-to-March quarter of FY26, compared with roughly 4,860 units for Mercedes-Benz over the same period.

The margin is tight, but the result caps a sustained push by BMW to close the gap on its Stuttgart-based rival. The Bavarian marque has more than doubled its annual sales volumes over roughly four years, while also recording strong demand for its premium electric models, which made up just over a fifth of its Q4 FY26 sales.

BMW last held the number one position in India in 2012, when it sold around 9,375 cars, with Audi in second place and Mercedes-Benz third. What followed was a significant reversal of fortunes. Audi seized top spot from BMW in 2013, the same year Mercedes-Benz launched what many in the industry consider its first major product offensive, a concerted push involving new model introductions, dealer network growth, brand experience improvements and a focus on cost of ownership.

Mercedes-Benz moved to second that year and, after closing in on Audi, took pole position in 2015. It has not relinquished that status since.

For the better part of a decade, no rival, German or otherwise, has come close to unseating Mercedes-Benz at the top of India's luxury car segment.

The brand has maintained its position through a consistent cycle of product launches, network expansion and customer engagement.

More recently, it has shifted its attention increasingly towards the higher end of its own range, where demand has grown alongside India's expanding base of wealthy buyers. Top-end vehicles now account for around a quarter of total Mercedes-Benz volumes in the country, with growth running in the low double digits.

Whether BMW can sustain its quarterly advantage and mount a credible challenge for the full-year crown in FY27 remains to be seen, but its return to the summit, however briefly, signals that the contest for India's luxury car crown is far from settled.
