BMW Group India has become the first luxury carmaker in the country to surpass 5,000 electric vehicle (EV) deliveries, cementing its leadership in the fast-growing premium EV space. To mark the milestone, the company also unveiled India’s first high-power charging corridor spanning 4,000 km from Jammu to Madurai, with charging stations positioned every 300 km.
BMW’s latest achievement underscores its early-mover advantage in luxury EVs. Since launching its electric range in 2021, the company has steadily expanded its portfolio to become the only luxury carmaker in India offering both electric cars and scooters. Its line-up now includes the i7, iX, i5, i4, iX1 Long Wheelbase, MINI Countryman E, and electric two-wheelers like the BMW CE 04 and CE 02.
The strategy has clearly paid off. In the first half of 2025 alone, BMW Group India delivered 1,322 EVs, posting a 234% growth over last year. Electric cars now contribute 18% of its overall sales, with the iX1 LWB emerging as the top-seller, followed closely by the i7 luxury sedan.

Rivals lag behind
While BMW has consolidated its lead, rivals are yet to close the gap. Mercedes-Benz India, which retails models such as the EQB, EQE SUV, EQS 580 and the locally-assembled EQS 53 AMG, has sold fewer than 3,500 EVs cumulatively. In H1 2025, its EV penetration stood at just under 10% of total sales. Volvo, despite being among the first to launch an EV (XC40 Recharge) and adding the C40 Recharge, has managed just around 2,000 units so far, though it benefits from competitive pricing. Audi India’s e-tron range has struggled to gain traction, with limited numbers—estimated to be under 1,500 units cumulatively.
BMW’s nearest competitor remains Mercedes, but the German rival is focusing more on hybrids and internal combustion models in the Indian portfolio. Meanwhile, Volvo and Audi have smaller EV line-ups and relatively limited charging tie-ups, leaving them at a disadvantage.

Building an ecosystem
What gives BMW an edge is not just products but a 360-degree ecosystem. The newly launched high-power corridor complements nearly 300 BMW Destination Chargers at premium hotels, resorts, and malls. Along with partnerships with operators like Statiq and Zeon, the company now provides access to over 6,000 charging points nationwide.
BMW also offers a “Charging Concierge” for route planning and unified payments, ensuring EV buyers get peace of mind.
As the luxury EV race intensifies, BMW’s head start, broadest portfolio, and ecosystem-first approach have placed it firmly ahead of its German and Swedish rivals in India.
