BMW India has opened bookings for the i5 electric sedan, ahead of its launch in the coming weeks. BMW will bring the full-fat i5 M60 xDrive to India as a completely built unit (CBU) and deliveries will begin from May 2024. It can be booked by paying a token amount of ₹1.5 lakh and could be priced at ₹1.25 crore (ex-showroom, India). The i5 is expected to make its India debut at the upcoming BMW JoyTown festival in Mumbai on April 12.
The i5 will be BMW’s fifth all-electric model in India following the iX, i4, i7 and iX1. It will be BMW’s second most powerful electric model after the i7’s M70 xDrive variant which produces 650 bhp. The i5 M60 xDrive gets dual electric motors producing 593 bhp and 820 Nm. The i5 can sprint from 0-100 kmph in 3.8 seconds (claimed) and has a range of 516 km (WLTP).
Vikram Pawah, President, BMW Group India, said, “The BMW i5 M60 xDrive is an epic athlete - it captivates from start to finish and leads with elegant design, innovative technology and dynamic performance. With the introduction of the first-ever BMW i5 M60 xDrive, we will further enhance the exceptionally diverse and innovative lineup of electric vehicles, and strengthen BMW Group India’s position in the Indian electric luxury car segment.”
The i5 is the first-ever all-electric version of the BMW 5 Series. It is based on the eighth-gen model which was revealed globally last year. The new 5 Series has also been spotted in India recently, hinting at its imminent launch in India. It was spotted near Chennai’s Global Automotive Research Centre (GARC). While initial speculation leaned towards the possibility of the long-wheelbase variant, it is clear that at least the i5 will be the standard wheelbase version in India with the regular 5-series being the long-wheelbase version. Recently, the 5 Series and i5 won the World Luxury Car award at the latest round of the World Car Awards.
