BMW has reintroduced the X4 SUV coupe in India. Earlier this year, it was discontinued from the lineup but the Indian arm of the German automaker has now launched the X4 M40i, priced at Rs. 96.20 lakh (ex-showroom, India). This new model joins BMW's sportier variants, including the BMW X3 M40i and BMW M340i.
The main changes are in the engine. It now boasts a more potent 355 bhp and 500 Nm from its 3.0-litre twin-turbo 6-cylinder engine, which can propel the SUV to a top speed of up to 250 kmph. Even with its 2-tonne curb weight, it accelerates from 0 to 100kmph in just 4.9 seconds. Power is sent to all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission, and you can also take control manually using the paddle shifters.
To complement its speed on straight roads and agility in corners, BMW has made significant improvements to the X4's mechanical components. They've adjusted the steering rack for quicker turns and incorporated adaptive suspension that can be adjusted for a softer or stiffer ride as needed, while the M Sport differential ensures power is sent to the wheels with better traction. Additionally, the X4 M40i now comes with larger brakes for improved stopping power.
Just like all the M performance versions, BMW has made the standard X4 sportier and more aggressive by adding M-specific parts. These include a glossy blacked-out grille, glossy black skid plates, and ORVMs (outside rearview mirrors), along with new sportier alloy wheels. The distinct twin L-shaped LED DRL signature in the slim headlights and the horizontal LED tail lights remain unchanged. The regular X4 had a stylish sloping roofline, and the minor cosmetic changes on the M40i version have significantly enhanced its sporty look.
While the dashboard layout and flow remain the same, BMW has made some small adjustments to emphasise that you're not in a regular X4. These include a carbon fibre trim and M-specific seat belts, along with leather sports seats. The panoramic sunroof and ambient lighting with 6 colours to choose from adds to the mood of the cabin.
Inside the car, there are two screens: a 12.3-inch infotainment system and a 12.3-inch driver's display. It also includes a heads-up display. The X4 M40i also offers features like 3-zone climate control, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, connected car technology, ventilated seats, and a panoramic sunroof. There is also a Harman Kardon Surround Sound System with 16 speakers.
BMW EfficientDynamics enhances driving comfort with features like Auto Start-Stop, ECO PRO mode, Brake-Energy Regeneration, Electronic Power Steering, 50:50 Weight Distribution, and various innovative technologies. Using the Driving Experience Control switch, the driver can select different driving modes (ECOPRO, COMFORT, SPORT/SPORT+) to match various driving conditions. Lastly, there is also the parking assist which provides assistance in reversing out of a parking spot.
In terms of safety, the car comes with six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, and a range of standard ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) features, such as blind spot assist, lane departure warning, and autonomous emergency braking.
It's competition in the market is the upcoming Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC Coupe and the Porsche Macan. In terms of pricing it rivals with Range Rover Velar.
